For some coverage click here.

The big publishers seem to spew out casual shit exclusively these days. Most games are totally devoid of good gameplay, recycling the same old ideas for the n-th time, but hey, they got bloody HD graphics, so why would you care about gameplay, right? The indie devs put out incredibly good games nearly daily, the games are mad fun, bring on fresh ideas, often feature a very unique or retro artstyle, since here is no way that the developer could pay the licensing costs for the unreal-id-cry-bite engine 5000. Also you'll actually find challenging games there, not that utterly casual experience (most big games are terribly easy even on their hard-instadeath-uber-inferno mode). So, yeah, Indie games are the way to go nowadays. (esp. Since you won't pay 60 euros for a game with 5 hours of campaign and a lackluster multiplayer).

Amnesia
Borderlands
does 'all the fallouts' include 1 and 2, and tactics? althoguh 2 is definitely better than 1, so much more too it, however many people have been working on a big huge overhaul adding so much new content to fallout 1.
a second for Portal
Deus Ex, all of them. I have only played the first, but i'ev heard the only reason the sequels haven't gotten as much praise is that they're not quite as groundbreaking as the original was.
Commandos 2. Fucking superb game.

Is it any good? C&c has been going downhill since the first generals expansion for me, never getting back up.

Re: Decent games for PC

Some gems:

Orcs Must Die / Orcs Must Die 2
Guild Wars 2
Mass Effect 1-3 (some issues with combat, but great storytelling. Yes, its EA. Just don't buy the DLC).
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion
Dawn of War 2 + expansions
Starcraft 2
Freelancer

I echo the above comments on Commandos/Commandos 2. Great games.

Duke Nukem was good 15 years ago but hasn't stood the test of time and the latest incarnation was just shit. Not the shit. Just shit. If you want FPS, Unreal Tournament still blows the pants off this. And if you want proper old school FPS, Quake. Accept no substitues for the original rocket jumping twitch-skill game. These days, it runs on a toaster. But you're probably better with UT as I already mentioned

I immediately spotted Startopia, which I haven't played in years. Fun game from an outfit in Guildford.

On the horizon, this year's big hopeful is the remake of UFO: Enemy Unknown, which is out on Oct 9th and is available on Steam for pre-order. Looking forward to that as they promise to keep the turn-based action hardcore. Your guys die, they're gone forever. Mourn... then panic as you struggle to complete missions with a reduced team.

Sounds like you've been buying into EA's stuff and got bitten

Why not playing indie games then praising the quality compared to the big publishers?

Regardless, most games put out are bland and uninteresting, regardless of whether they are indie or big publishers. Most indie games are turds too, only forgivable because they cost less bucks.

Minecraft. Seems silly at first but becomes unbelievably addictive very quickly. Endless things to do.

1, 2 and New Vegas. Surely Fallout 3 is a good game, but it's like watching a sequel to a Quentin Tarantino movie, that was written and directed by James Cameron.

If you enjoy RTSs, I'd recommend Anno 1404, Anno 2070, Company of Heroes, Crusader Kings II, Civ V, etc.

C&C 3:Tiberium Wars is fuckin' epic man, Ive been addicted to that game for almost a decade...

Just got Kane's Wrath, the campaign is shamefully short, but the game itself and skirmish and skirmish options is great.

Re: Decent games for PC

Borderlands 2 coming out in less than 2 weeks.
The recent Sleeping Dogs (not a fan of it)
Games almost never come out during summer due to marketing purposes, so if you can't find any existing games that interest you, just wait. There's a LOT coming out this fall and probably even more in january. Lurk gametrailers.com (or anything similar) for recent/upcoming games or by genre.
