Retro/vintage synth emulation(mostly Moog emulation in the video above) recorded onto (old/damaged)tape.. The more imperfections/tape saturation, the closer you'll get to the BoC sound in my opinion
I loved this. Maybe a bit too damaged, but it's the consistent sound of it. Really good stuff.

I love that tone, and nice first track too! beats the synthesized method any day, and with allot less effort too

also from the origianl video I'm going to start exploring the lfo now, had no idea there were all those options in the ableton lfo

Re: Boards of Canada Tutorial

You can cheat a little and get Phonec synth by Psychic Modulation. "Inspired by the mystique of video logo synth scores from worn out VHS tapes..." I think it's a pretty cool tool. Just don't over use it.

I'm pretty sure the REAL secret to BoC sounds is having a lot of these:

Re: Boards of Canada Tutorial

Phonec synth is great, there is also a Reaktor synth called Rubiter Ate Polysynth, my favourite synth on Reaktor.

Re: Boards of Canada Tutorial

One could perhaps use something like : XLN Audio's RC-20 Retro Color plugin.

Granted, not as nice as hardware but useful
