Cubase gain meter problem

i have never seen this before but im sure its due to a setting ive missed that somehow got changed, so hopefully can help explain this.

my meters are showing 3dB less than my actual sound is, and the signal is also being attenuated by 3dB, but not until after the two post gain inserts.

my sample is peaking at -1dBFS, i know this because i have normalised it to -1dBFS, and placed a very trustworthy meter on one of the 6 pre gain inserts.
yet my tracks gain meter is showing -4dB and will even allow me to turn the gain up by 4dB before it shows clipping.
i also placed a meter after the gain and it still shows -1dB, yet when i put the meter on the master bus it shows -4dB

there are no inserts or sends on and trim is set to 0dB

so somehow cubase is lowering the gain by 3dB after the post gain insert stage and showing it on the meter that happens before that stage.

any ideas?

thanks

Re: cubase gain meter problem

just realised this only happens with mono sounds.

im not so worried now i know its not a setting ive missed. i assume it has something to do with lowering the volume to create a L and R channel (the project is in stereo) so that it still sounds the same. 3dB is the rule of thumb for things like that.

i will leave this thread here though for future searches.

This should be a little sticky for those who have not fell victim to Pan Law yet..or those who forgot about it...
Plus it shows the importance of mono baby!
