Mixing hybrid style music.

I've been writing hybrid style orchestral and electronic music recently.

I'd love to know how you go about mixing your bass down something punchy, as all those clean instruments get washed out rather quickly with Damage going nuts in the master.

Re: Mixing hybrid style music.

Keep the low end as clean as possible. Cut ~200hz from everything that doesnt need it. Be more aggressive if you have to. Keep everything under~300hz in mono. Brain Worx has a few plugins with their really nice one knob "mono maker" which you could just put on the master and force all the low frequencies of the mix to mono. Dynamic EQ. Dynamic gain staging. Panning. EQ reverb.

Re: Mixing hybrid style music.

* Do careful mid-side eqing and don't put distortion on anything that really really doesn't need it.
* Don't monoize the bass at all. Part of the humongous stereo width comes from bass stereo. Besides, a lot of the fundmental core pitches and harmonics are downt there so don't gut them.
* EQ your master as the tune comes towards completion.
* Don't put reverb or delay on anything that doesn't absolutely need it.
* Don't sidechain padlike sounds. It just makes them pump and it's not natural and not needed. People can hear sounds mixed together. Learn to EQ, and gain stage, and limit instead.

Re: Mixing hybrid style music.

Automate the low end bass EQ, preferably into a dist.

Re: Mixing hybrid style music.

Maybe... don't put damage on the master? :U
I'm not entirely sure what that is, but whatever needs it, just put it on the track itself or make a sub-mix.

Other than that... I mean, I use my ears. Every piece of music is different so, I could analyze what my process was on a certain track, but it wouldn't necessarily work on any other track...

I'd agree with making sure to aggressively chop the lows off of anything that doesn't need them. Right up until it start to become audible, then back off just a tiny bit.

A lot of stuff needs some lows though, very much depends on the music.

Make sub channels instead of master mixer.

Its nice to have the reverb sit outside some of the effect chain to get more presence, use sends.

uh, yeah... which is why I said 'off anything that doesn't need them';U

Like I said, my method is to find just where it starts to audibly cut the sound in the mix, then back off just a lil bit. Then you're cutting out inaudible frequencies that are just eating headroom, without compromising the character of the sound.

Re: Mixing hybrid style music.

a lot of it is a composition issue; don't have too many simultaneous elements

You can spend a lifetime learning to produce music and still never break this nut; worse, you may not even realize that's your problem.

I'm just pointing out for OP that there can be value for some layers in the lower area.
