Massive only good for bass?

I've been messing around with Massive for a while and have also read a lot of the VST posts but not sure I've gotten a clear answer. So, to me, it seems like Massive is very geared towards making very bass heavy sounds. I know it is possible to make other sounds on there too but they just don't sound as good. Am I right in thinking this?

Also, I am very interested in making some of the more "euphoric" type of sounds (e.g. Eitro, some Swedish House Mafia, Axwell, etc.) that are less bass-y and more melodic. Is there a certain synth that is really good for making this type of music?

Would really appreciate any thoughts!

Re: Massive only good for bass?

Step 1: Open Massive
Step 2: Spend hours and hours fiddling knobs like a crack head.
Step 3: Yo dawg I heard you like LFOs so I put an LFO in your LFO so you can wob while you weeg.
Step 4: You produce a sound frequency that causes David Guetta to explode.
Step 5: You're a hero.

run your oscillators through a high-pass filter instead of a low-pass filter?

Massive is capable of a lot of sounds, especially electro leads.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

in my might massive makes very raw sounds

bass or leads or what ever they always sound sharp, and rough.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

It's may be one of the easiest synth's to make a heavy bass wobble in but IMO Massive works great to do all kinds of leads, pads etc. too.

One thing that I think people have lost about Massive is the really sweet atmospheric pad-sounds you kan make. When people think about Massive they mostly think about heavy bass growls.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

Massive can do some pretty amazing sounds If you spend the time with it. I think lots of people spend way to much time relying on the built in automation sources with it. Try using host automation on a pad sound and turn it into a evolving sound that goes beyond what the built in modulation can offer.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

Massive has opened a new world of bass for me, and in the process I found that it's a strong lead synth as well. I enjoy placing it in the upper ranges with lots of glide and let it slide through a single-note version of the chords that my pads are playing.

Do not under-estimate the power of Massive as a string synth, either. In the Massive Threat bank, check out the sound-structure named Afex Jeff Strings. I took that sound, removed the LFO and pitch variations, and used it in my latest melodic dubstep track. Can't link to it because this forum is so strict, so you'll just have to take my word for it.

In summary, I'm a fan of Massive, and it's not just for bass. Renz has me laughin' my a** off though, lol.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

I haven't used Massive as much as I have Reaktor and Absynth, but it seems pretty good. Like most of NI's stuff it's really not at all intuitive to program, so I've used the occasional preset -- I keep flipping back to Reaktor when I want to build a sound from scratch because I know it won't flake on me if I decide to do something weird.

No it's not only good for bass...it's a powerful plugin that should be used wisely if it ends up in the wrong hand the world could be in trouble and no would be able to stop them!

Re: Massive only good for bass?

Massive is good enough to recreate a high variety of different synths. Tweak, twist and you will see. Original presets are also illustrating this quite well.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

It kinda irritates the shit out me when people try to classify a plug-in to only do a certain sound. I have been told absynth was only good for atmosphere sounds and that massive is only used for dub step wobbles...

Massive is one of the most intuitive synths out on my opinion. Almost as intuitive as Diva and Lush. It has great possibilities... that's why i own it.

I totally agree with you buddy.... I've herd this plenty of times from people ... but most of them are usually preset junkies if you noticed..... massive is a great plug in... i could make almost a whole track with it minus hi hats snares and minor percution .. lol... other then that its pretty much massive all the way....

Re: Massive only good for bass?

I like massive for everything, plucks, pads, leads, bass. I'll still learning everyday, it's a HUGE vst. I think I'll never learn everything about it. One thing that help me get lead sounds is to get a good lead preset. Then take a hour or so and take away a filter, add it again, listen what made the difference. It's very time consuming and atleast I think I got tone deaf a couple of times.

Re: Massive only good for bass?

i've been able to pull off a few pretty decent atmospherics with massive.

i know it's sort of taboo to say this, but i'm sort of a fan of the in-synth reverb..
