Music you'd play in a bar

Hey, as any parisian student does, I'm a waiter in a bar/restaurant. It's a small place, and the ambience is family-like since everyone is pretty much from the district. The whole place is decorated with funny statuettes, orange lanterns, wood&steel chairs ; kind of a vintage/reconstructed from scrap idea.

As much as I like working here, the music gets boring when it's always the same Itunes playlist on repeat.

I'm trying to get some new stuff on when I can but it's such a struggle to come out with stuff that aren't too "strange" neither too "chilled".

Do you have any suggestions (songs, artists, albums) of what could be good for this purpose ?
The idea is to have at least 7 hours covered

Knowing that the boss basically skips a track right away when more than 10 seconds of it clashes.

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

---
What I tried so far :
Four tet - too chilled on most of the tracks ; "she moves she" has that glitchy guitar sound that didn't pass.
Tipper - Wobble factor made it for most of the tracks (Veil Lifter big favourite), Seamless Unspeakable Something was commented "experimental stuff" but some of it still pass (Wondering Clown)

Daniel Johnston - the most "commerciable" songs (The Beatles, It's Impossible)
Damu the Fudgemunk - gets repetitive if it isn't mixed with different stuff
Digi G'alessio - the non-wonky bits of the yellow book ; beats & pina colada
Why? - "A Sky for Shoeing Horses" and "Fatalist Palmistry"

I found they like a bit of hip-hop once in a while
I played an electro-swing mix from soundcloud and the guy really liked it (he said he thought it was spot-on the mood of the palce)

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

Amon Tobin : if you refer to "Stoney Street" and such, yes
Lusine : I actually played some of Serial Hodgepodge the other day and it was pretty successful (Slur, The Stop), I get scared when it gets too glitchy though

Film is a good track, yes, good idea.

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

Daughters
Funny thing is I made a joke playlist for myself with Daughters in it, Zu, Moha!, The Locust, Ed Gein, Naked City, all that stuff. Thinking about how people would look at the speakers and my boss going "no"

I'm listening to The Crystal Method right now, I might try some. Not sure how it'll do though.

About jazz : Gipsy jazz is always welcome, although in small doses (and I get bored very fast on gipsy jazz) ; and it's always dangerous to play jazz in a bar. Clich lounge ambience. Some of The Lounge Lizards did good, some Medeski Martin & Wood too.

The Crystal Method wouldn't do anyone any good at all. Perhaps the suggestion was sarcastic.

Anything off this record should do:

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

Maybe some Jazzanova? Some of it's pretty chill, but there's some R&B influence to some of it and if you've got a more liberal crowd, the world music elements they throw in might be well received. Check out the "In Between" album.

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

Yes, In Between is the only album I ever listened from Jazzanova (and the r&b influence is exactly what I don't like about the e-jazz scene). But e-jazz in general is a good idea, I don't know many good bands though.

I think there's already some jazzanova in the present playlist.
I took note yesterday night of some of the main artists that we're likely to hear there.
a short list :
Sayag Jazz Machine ; Bonobo ; some Mr Scruff, General Elektriks ; The Streets (original pirate material) ; Us3 (funk band) ; some Prefuse 73 (perverted undertones) ; Morcheeba ; Metronomy ; Toots & the Maytals (classic ska ; there's a lot in that genre too) ; DJ Shadow ; Fatboy Slim ; Negresses Vertes ; Gainsbourg ; Nova tunes comps (Nova is a paris based radio station that plays groove/soul music) ; OST's
It's like 600 songs long so I didn't write em all out.

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

some enya or something.

Bjork?

Honestly... this is a totally sincere, either some Melvins or Ween? I know i know, but they both have a few sorta mellow tracks if i remember right... Maybe try Skin Horse by the Melvins?

Led Zeppelin? Pink Floyd? The Who? The Doors? Neil Young? Emerson Lake and Palmer? :v

THE MARS VOLTA trololol. Honestly though maybe like, Asilos Magdalena?

Some Puscifer? Neutral Milk Hotel(get many hipsters eating there? :V ) Blackbird Raum, maybe Germina could workl?

Re: Music you'd play in a bar

thanks ghyt for all the income, I appreciate it

you bet there are hipsters in paris. That district's pretty clear though compared to other places. And they're more New Wave and minimal hipsters rather than anti-folk.

The other guys aren't too much into rock music, by the way ("rock" in general, meaning distorted guitars and crash cymbals). The most rockish stuff i've been able to play was sonic youth (incinerate) and a few deerhoof (a very very few). Pop-rock like Micachu went well for most of it.

I'd love to work in a place where they play puscifer or anything involving patton but it isn't so.

Pink Floyd, The Doors ; those are already in the playlist (you know, "people are strange" "brick in the wall" etc.) and I think I heard some Neil Young at one point.
Blackbird Raum : that kind of music is very popular in France ! (you'd bet, anything with an accordion)
Couldn't find Germina, do you have a link to one of their songs ?

germina is a typo of Germinal which is a Blackbird Raum song, so that's why you didn't find it. x3

I agree with you about the R&B influence, as e-jazz is what really got me into electronic music. A few good e-jazz acts:

Micatone
Atjazz
Clara Hill
Kyoto Jazz Massive-Japanese group, definitely more in the "chillout" category, but still really good.
Jaga Jazzist-One of my faves, but some of their stuff tends more toward avant garde which isn't something i assume you're looking for. Their album "A Livingroom Hush" is probably more along the lines of what you're looking for.

NuSpirit Helsinki
Extended Spirit
[re:jazz]

These are a good place to start. Last.fm can be a good resource. Let me know if any of these work out.

Bonobo, Trentemoller, Lamb, Mr Scruff, Plaid.

Older Good lookin' records had a load of compilation and mix albums that are quite nice.

Royksopp... Some of Flying Lotus' less glitchy stuff... Possibly some of Phillip Glass' compositions... There are some Aphex songs that you may be able to get away with, some of the more mellow stuff from DruQks like jynweythek ylow or Avril 14th... Even some of his ambient stuff, like Cliffs or Rhubarb, or some of the songs he did under the alias Polygon Window, Bike Pump Meets Bucket comes to mind...
