I have found some of the lesser known acts were my favorites at Coachella. At heart I love hearing a rock band live. There's something so personal about it. I highly doubt it will die out.

I hope you don't think I'm "one side of the coin" or a troll for that matter. I've played in bands for 10 years. I've played piano for 20 years and the guitar for 10. I love the sound of acoustic instruments because it's what I was brought up listening to.

And here's where I might lose people. I don't think music is a performance art at all. It just doesn't need to be anymore. A lot of people associate music with instruments and live performance because for centuries, that's the only capacity in which music existed. We're conditioned to think that way. Pre-digital, when music was made with instruments--pianos, guitars, drum kits etc, there was a strong case for the argument that live music is more "authentic" that recorded music (given that acoustic noise can never be perfectly reproduced by a set of speakers no matter how advanced the technology). But now that so much music is made "in the box", that argument's becoming less and less valid.

As music becomes increasingly electronic--and why shouldn't it, instruments are limited--the concept of music performance will surely die out. How many of these kids actually care about what Avicii's doing with his hands when he performs? He's there because celebrity sells. The kids are there for the atmosphere--the crowd, the light show and the auditory experience. Avicii's "performance" is only a miniscule part of the show. Yes, he's the drawcard but his mere presense is enough to validate having his name on the ticket; how much of the music is "live" is just about irrelevant. Honestly, the bloke really could turn up and say "music is in the ears not the hands" and play the complete set on his iPod and it wouldn't matter to the bulk of the crowd.

Re: Rock music is dead, Electronic Music has taken over

While I agree that music doesn't necessarily need to be performed, there's something magical about an audience sharing in an intimate moment of creation, when the artist loses themselves in the music, or ad libs something new and unplanned, that you don't get from someone pressing play.

The Dismemberment Plan

I guess I should comment on the actual issue at hand, too.

I can't say what the scene kids are into, since I haven't lived in the the west for close to a decade, but isn't this the same stuff people were saying during the late 70's and the entire 80's? Yeah.

The original post is post 1 in this thread that you made.
Being forced means one is made to do something, oftentimes against his / her will.
Drinking is the act of ingesting liquid and mud is what happens when you mix water with dirt.

Clear?

Edit: upon further reflection I don't think there's any such thing as "muddy water." Perhaps that's what tripped you up.

How would you suggest explaining this to someone who "has no idea what it means" then?

The point of the post was to point out that Electronic Music (more specifically EDM) has become more mainstream than organic acts in the US. I cant stand electro house and brostep so this doesnt really pertain to my scene. But there is a lot of runoff from the masses accepting electronic music which opens up alot of doors for the stuff I enjoy. Oh and to point out that Rock music has regressed in the last couple decades leaving people wanting for something different and interesting. Sure there are still good bands out there. Electronic music is just more pleasing to the ears and more interesting IMO.

Re: Rock music is dead, Electronic Music has taken over

People aim to get positive strokes from other people. When they can't get positive strokes, often they go for negative strokes as a less good attempt to get attention. There's usually all kinds of barbs and silliness spat out to get it. Think of a child thats howling for attention because it can't get the snuggly fluffy attention it wants.

They'd rather drink muddy water than have no water.

Which is pretty much how Provider's posts/threads come across to date.
