I check my mixes in mono with destroyfx Monomaker. I try to keep all my low end in mono. I use gentle widening on the upper mid and high frequencies. I once had what I thought was an incredible, fat (phat?) bass sound preset on a track. When I checked it in mono, the bass nearly dropped out of the track entirely. Since then, I just keep the bass in mono from the beginning.
