Cakewalk ending product development

Well, I guess I jumped ship at just the right time, but still that's a bummer. SONAR was all I used for years until recently.

For the small handful of us here using it: [Only registered and activated mad cunts can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.

That's a bit shitty..buy the company in 2013..launch a new model for SONAR..screw it up..and then leave everyone high and dry. Way to go, Gibson!

I hope the staff find new jobs soon, whether in another part of Gibson or elsewhere.

Saw something like this coming and said so at the time they did the 'lifetime updates' thing for Sonar. I bought the lifetime updates with the view that if I got a year or two out of it, it had covered its costs. However they've not fixed some of the major issues in Sonar for a long time now.

Its a shame but thats what often happens when companies buy little ones. They take ownership of the IP and ruthlessly strip the company if it doesn't make them money fast enough.

There's only a few key people behind Sonar so you can bet they will set up on their own and develop a new product or you'll find a key competitor scores a boost.

The Cakewalk forums are quite interesting this morning. A lot of people seem to blame Cakewalk without realising this all comes from Gibson. Cakewalk are just the unwanted pet getting flushed.

A few people who have recently subscribed for updates are understandably very annoyed.

Yeah!
It's funny how Gibson has been taking a ton of shit from the guitar market for some reason, and now this.
Seems like they aren't going to be popular!
And a few artists have come out recently and shit talked their experience working with Gibson, Bill Keliher of Mastodon off the top of my head.

They did a good opto compressor plugin relatively recently, wish I had gotten it while it was free as that's just not the popular type of compressor.

SofTube has an excellent version of the Lydkraft CL-1B, which I just love. They also have a nice channel strip to go with it. They recently had a sale and I couldn’t resist. Had it only as a Reason rack extension. That and Presswerk should have me set. Oh, and that FabFilter multi band one.

In case any Sonar users here haven't heard about it: it seems you can "crossgrade" from Sonar to Studio One Pro for 50% off the normal crossgrade price from Studio one Artist to Pro until January 1st:

EDIT: this one should be a bit cheaper: [Only registered and activated mad cunts can see links. Click Here To Register...]

Melodyne just switched from Essential to Player for no reason I can see. Look on Melodyne website it still shows as activated but within Cakewalk its the greyed-out player and can't change anything.

Gibson, you are cunts. Nobody should buy anything from you ever. Thanks for leaving us high wide and stinking like a giraffe's arse.

Can you download Essential direct from Melodyne and run it as a stand-alone..or does the registration of the version that came with the daw cover that?

When I've used a version direct from Melodyne in the past to fix a problem its caused issues with the installation and license but it might be worth investigating because nothing's coming from Cakewalk after Gibson pulling the plug.

This is interesting, an AMA by a former Cakewalk employee:

I switched over to cubase and using Jbridge I got all my vsts running, some plugins are still locked though. Sonar was awesome while it lasted.

Bandlab have bought Cakewalk. They are sending out emails telling people to create an account so they can migrate your old account across.

Cakewalk's back.

Yeah..but I bet ya they'll be hawking their own services and "incorporating" Cakewalk into their services, as per the company statement they put out.

What I didn't like is I can't log into my old Cakewalk account..told me no such account exists and that now accounts can't be created..so any new accounts will be BandLab ones and not Calkwalk..kinda like what happened when Apple took over Camel Audio a while back. Alchemy got sucked in and transformed into something slightly different, but now Apple..and all the old Alchemy users were left out in the cold, with no ongoing support or service.

I suspect that's what's going to happen in this case, too..but I could be totally wrong.

How is any of that worse than how Gibson played it since taking over? :D

Re: Cakewalk ending development and shutting down

I guess it's not on face value..but "acquisitions" like this usually lead to something "weaker"..Gibson being a case in point.
