Alternative Controllers!

A lot of you are probably aware of some cool alternative controllers out there. I'm always looking for interesting controllers that aren't typical, so why not have a thread completely dedicated to em?

Post some cool alternatives to typical MIDI controllers!

I pre-ordered an Artiphon, will report back...

For someone like me who understands the fretboard easier than a keyboard, something like that is a godsend.

I was also looking into the YouRock controller, but the Artiphon seemed more flexible.

Man that looks super cool I am keen on hearing your feedback on that controller!

Also, no mention of the Linnstrument?

That thing is truly droolworthy...

What fascinates me recently are pad instruments, like the Electribes/Tempest/Beatstep Pro, with built-in scales and sequencer.
I know, they limit you to scale notes, but also make it easier to learn chord shapes and pattern that can work on any scale in the same shape.

Wait what! You can set scales to the tempest like on the electribe!
Cool!
Also on the subject of beat step pro anyone use one with an iPad and synth apps yet?

Get ready to do some serious MAX/MSP programming though.

The Soundplane looks amazingly beautiful.

Scales and pad controller (Togehter with its synth engine) are the reasons why I'd love to trade my A4 for a Tempest, but the A4 has the best-sounding reverb I've heard in a synth...

Too bad the soundplane is expensive as fuck AND out of stock.

I thought the Linnstrument was too obvious hehe, but yeah, that's such a beast... Might be one of the best controllers ever made, it definitely looks the most expressive.

Also, Novation Circuit can be used as a controller, with a grid of 4 octaves of scale-bound pads

I've used a Beatmania IIDX controller as a drumpad before. You can do it through MIDIJoys and a USB to PS2 converter. It was kindof hard to set up, but still a weird little controller.

There's the Hot Hand USB Wireless MIDI Controller that has a motion-sensing accelerometerand can be used with pretty much all the major DAWs
I've seen KiNK using it and explaining what he does with it in a DJ Techtools "How I Play video"
(Sorry, I can't post links as I don't have enough posts)

I just ordered a Linnstrument :mayonesa: and i`m super excited. Especially the introduction videos by Roger Linn himself hocked me up. In one video he took a quite boring normal Synth sound with filter... and only by playing it with the Linnstrument (and yes, he did mention, that you have to practice to learn some techniques... Linnstrument is no magic wand) there was so much expressiveness... suddenly a very beautiful sound.

You can`t make the Linnstrument play only "in scale notes", because it prevents the correct slides... but you can make it that way, that only the "in scale notes" are lighted up...

... and there is a guy who wrote a stand alone app with max, that turns it into a classic "all notes in scale" controller ... but that way, you can`t do the beautiful slides any more.

I guess as newbie i can`t start threads yet... but a "Linnstrument" thread would be nice :)

PS: the soundplane looks... sounds... awesome as well...

Supported this on kickstarter a while back and should be getting these pretty soon. I hope they are as good as they look.

I got a Misa Digital Kitara a few years ago, which is the shape of a guitar with a touchscreen on the body and buttons for every fret on every 'string'. The onboard interface is pretty crappy but I always thought if you were willing and able to put the time and effort into coding it yourself you could turn in into something powerful. Multitouch touchscreen and 124 buttons all at your immediate disposal.
