How To Make Hypnotizing Binaural Beats [Brainwaves!]

Most of you know how to do this, but I couldn't find a proper tutorial so I thought I'd take a stab. It's very simple and fun. Although the benefits of binaural beats range from the fantastic to total quackery / pseudoscience, they still set the transparent pulse for some of the most relaxing meditation tapes ever made.. and if used sneakily enough in your own work, maybe you could inflict some feelings of paranoia or totally blissful relaxation upon your listeners. It's like playing jesus.

What you need:
-A pair of headphones (don't use speakers for this)
-Subtractive softsynth with at least 2 oscillators (Serum demo works great if you freeze the track)
-GTune / C_Tuner (both are freeware, both work for this)

Optional:
SAPI 5 TTS Reader // Good voices for TTS
Microphone for foley & backdrops or your own speech

Firstly, you want to trigger two sinewaves. Do not warp or shape anything. Pan one hard left and the other hard right like so:

The real magic happens when you play with the finetuning of one of the oscillators. You should be able to hear some effect immediately with even a small difference of 9 cents while playing a C3 (put your headphones on for this part). If your brain starts to oscillate, you're doing it right. I wouldn't suggest modulating any of this with an LFO unless you really want to kill people, but playing with the parameter in your DAW for a desired effect over a long period of time can be really cool or possibly therapeutic, according to some weirdos.

With your tuner out, you should be able to see exactly what frequencies are happening by muting one of the oscillators.

The idea with binaural beats is that the difference between these two frequencies is what your brain perceives and begins resonating in sync with. If you separate them too much, your brain will eventually figure out where sounds are coming from more specifically and your binaural beat will go bye bye. Keeping your frequencies in check (about 30 - 40 Hz, depending on which interweb you ask) is supposedly ideal. To make things even more hypnotic, modulated noises or miked sounds can create a really nice bed for your binaural beats. As long as the beat is audible in the mix, it's just as effective, so you can really go nuts and whisper all sorts of subliminal messages to your listeners.

Cheers mate, gonna give this a squizz when I get back home. I once had a listen to some of those Binaural beats when i was younger cause the message said I could get high. It didn't work, but the sounds were relaxing as it is.

I think I know a song that used these... It felt like someone put an electric toothbrush in my head. If I find it, I'll post it. All I know, it's by Acrnym.

Many thanks and cheers for this thread! I think singing bowls are also a great means to achieve binaural bliss.

The brown note requires stereo headphones to work properly.

Hmmmmm, And all of this time I thought I was just drinking entirely too much coffee before hitting the studio. :P

i fucking love fucking with binaural beats
i have an occultist ambient sideproject going on and i experiment the hell out of them
one time i made a variable binaural beat (actually two of them) that abruptly gated between mu and theta with the a slow (really stretched out riff) binaural synth line whose frequencies slowly traded places with a light phaser going off in it (that i think, if i can recall correctly, was also a theta wave)

that same night i summoned baphomet and we had a drink

A free plugin that makes it so you can accurately set the frequency is Valhalla Freq Echo. Sean, the dev, has a couple blog posts on the subject as well.

I actually made a Serum feature request for frequency controls on the oscs so you could do this sort of thing accurately, but I wouldn't expect to ever see it implemented.

This is a pretty awesome tut. I'm going to try this out asap and see how it sounds. I'll try using 3xocs and find out if that wourks:D

It works on anything that can be finetuned and panned. If you can't pan hard left and right, just duplicate the track and do it within your DAW.

I just do it in Audacity before loading my samples into LMMS.

Even after a song is produced I can strip or retain band layers and layer expanded frequencies on both sides of the spectrum from the center unpanned frequency for more effects.
