What can you say about Dave Allison from Custom Made Music?

I've got a message today. Some guy called Dave Allison said he wants to include one of my tracks on his forthcoming sampler cd that will feature music of upcoming Custom Made Music releases and some other quality bands.
They will be making 1'000 CDs which will be sent to blogs, radio etc.

I kinda like this idea. But he ask me to pay $65 contribution to help with shipping. Can't say I could easily give this amount of money.
And I should say I'm from Russia, not USA.

So, what do you think? Is it worth it?

Dude, it wouldn't even cost 65 dollars to ship 100 CDs. Why would you ship CDs? All the blogs I've sent promo material to all take it digitally in one way or another.

With a Label site like that why would they need help with a release...6 yrs in business and still fledgling?..the pic of "him" relaxing after a release looks like he has bank...If a label likes you music they would usually pay YOU not the other way around..now if you are using a PRESS MY MESS type site ( a place you pay to make you CD release) then its usually legit..to me it smells a little fishy..

"artist as the investor" type scam.
is it just me or does that blog pic have that " “I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis" type feel to it.

Great points, I would personally ask artists who are currently released what their experience with the company is, ask the company what kind of benefits the 65$ goes to aside from the actual duplication/shipping costs (I mean they did say that it was going mainly to shipping costs), if it's worldwide, et cetera. It's one thing to say yes they are legit or no they aren't or we're not sure. It's another thing entirely to actually do some proper work to find out whether or not it's worth your time and money. That's just called business.

Yeah don't listen to me.

They're obviously trying to fuck you in the ass.

When it all boils down to it, tell him you aren't really into the idea of paying him for something he wants, and go from there. If he refuses, don't worry, if he really liked it, chances are somebody else will too, and they will be hooking you up for free.

1000 CDs is a shit lot of CDs

any normal label would buy what they can afford. if they can shift anything near 1000 CDs they dont need your 65 bucks. if they do need your money theyre delusional imo and will never shift 100 CDs probably.

Id tell them to go and fuck tbh. what are you really gonna get for your 65 dollars if it is legit?

Dead on!..We are just speculating on the legitimacy of the company at this point. It could go either way at this point a $65 lesson or a great business deal.I can only go by what my eyes see and that old adage."If it seems too good to be true, it probably is"....

IF you decide to go forward make sure you copyright your work..i cannot tell you how nportant it is to maintain the rights to your music..I know the Berne Convention covers it up to a point but follow your local laws to further protect yourself.

Good luck and happy noise making!!

what about 1000CDs suggests a label that is starting up or not very well footed?

if you can sell 200CDs you can afford to pay for them to be made just because youve been running long enough to be able to sell 200CDs

if you can sell 1000CDs then make up 6/700, sell them and then produce 1000 CDs next time. if you can actually shift such a number nobody would ask artists for money to help imo

Re: What can you say about Dave Allison from Custom Made Music?

1. A good chunk of the comments are based on the fact that it is in fact Dave Allison of Custom Made Music sending you the message.

2. Their soundcloud has less followers than I do and I am both not full of talent and not full of marketing effort.

3. Do you make Shoegaze/dream-pop (whatever those are) as this seems to be a label for that sort of music?

4. Companies that want to sell your stuff and ask for YOUR money up front.......

THERES NO WAY THEY CAN SHIFT 1000 CDS AND IF THEY COULD THEY WOULDNT NEED YOUR MONEY

Yeah, this label can not ship 1000 CD's. I know there are records on fucking far bigger labels that have sold less. I'm not saying it's a scam but this man is either fucking delusional, a terrible label head or both.

Or it's a scam.

Re: What can you say about Dave Allison from Custom Made Music?

There was once a guy on here who had inside contacts at iTunes who, for 75 dollars, could get your stuff posted there.

But...

He got banned and, much like this, that's a ridiculously stupid idea.

Re: What can you say about Dave Allison from Custom Made Music?

If you think this is a good idea, guy, you're the type of person this 'label' is looking for. Most labels that have offered me a spot on a comp were just doing cool little promotional things via bandcamp. $65 could fund your own physical release, just think about that for a hot minute.
