Good work - in my experience, compression is one of the hardest things for a beginner to get their heads round.

Re: Getting a grip of compression (with a goal minded focus)

I usually use compression on synths, bass, kickdrum and snares. And ofc on the master. What about you guys?

Use your brain before you add anything, compression or eq.

Ask why.

Yea. I like a tad here and there on a mix. Especially a colorful one.

Re: Getting a grip of compression (with a goal minded focus)

For me it's essential on bass, (shelled) drums and vocals in varying degrees. To get a consistent bass level especially, you'd need compression, and possibly limiting depending on the material/tuning. I do like to keep the ratios as low as possible in every case though, the threshold becomes the main tool once you've got the transients and the timing figured out. Fast attack/slow release on bass, slow attack/fast release on drums, and for vocals it can get pretty wild on my projects with three or four (plus a limiter) on the vocals, all lightly staged compression of course.

I always like just a tad on the main drum hits. Then drum bus. Often bass as well...I like a bit of grit on the bass...

You using all software compressors Numerical?

Re: Getting a grip of compression (with a goal minded focus)

Yep pretty much software. i used to use a nanocomp for bass on the way in (alongside a SansAmp bddi) but lately I'm just DI'ing it. This is real bass, not synthesized. Want to get a dbx hardware compressor since they are usually pretty cheap and work well for what I'm doing.

Oh and yeah I ALWAYS have a bass grit track going . Bump the eq @ 1000hz a little, froggy goodness galore.

Look into getting a modded DBX ....lots more headroom and wider image. There are some on ebay at the moment. Revive audio mods them. Im pretty set on getting a modded one. Maybe a 118 128 or 163x
