Removing hi hat from kick using phase inversion

This is a technique that I've heard about that works pretty effectively apparently, but how do I go about doing it? I'm working with a kick layered with a hi hat, and I have the exact hi hat sample to phase invert it with. I'm working in ableton, how do I go about doing this? Thanks in advance.

And I'm working with vengeance samples as opposed to real drum samples.

Here's the sample: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

Re: Removing hi hat from kick using phase inversion

assuming the hat wasn't EQd or compressed after it was layered with the kick (which it probably was), you'd just need to invert the phase on the solo hi hat, then play with where it starts relative to the start of the kick sample. When it's silent then you've cancelled both hat samples out.

Re: Removing hi hat from kick using phase inversion

In Ableton, I'm told you'd need to put a utility on the hat track, invert the phase using that and then bounce it. This'll introduce artifacts, though, which isn't ideal. Alternatively you could just download Reaper or Audacity and it's just a matter of selecting an option in the right-click menu.

Re: Removing hi hat from kick using phase inversion

what for you want to remove hi-hat? just not use loop if there is sounds your don't like or cut BD from loop and replace with another one w/o hi-hat. Some BassDrums have important frequencies on top, so if you remove layered hi-hat it will mess the sample. Especially doing is with phase manipulation, not good.

Re: Removing hi hat from kick using phase inversion

I think this is actually easier to do in a program like audacity.. where you can just directly manipulate the left and right channels and mix to mono.. may not really be "proper" though.
