I'm trying to get someone to do vocals, so this was pretty much carved out for a no-frills sound. Any critique on the mix is appreciated

I thought to top end sounded really flat, no dynamics, then I realized I was hearing a lot of aliasing noise, so just brickwall that when you do your master and it should be good.

Re: [Beatdown Hardcore] Agent Slimepunk - Untitled WIP

I've heard worse mixes from actual bands with at least 4 members that worked with some studio engineer to get this debut out who is possibly deaf or just "I know I'm ruining the mix but these guys want it that way, also they paid me in advance, can't wait to go fishing tomorrow once it's all over".

Genre wise, there's nothing beatdown here. I consider myself a straight edge slam-boi but I didn't mosh so my inner radar can't be wrong. For beatdown, you need to go slow, like dumbing-down riffs, make them chug for eternity. You can't mosh when it's fast, because most of audience are fat neckbeards with snapback caps and $9.99 tattoos.

With production, I feel that there's too much bass for my taste. I think guitars sound on point but this current balance of layers needs some alteration. Volume sliders can be shifted a bit which might sort these issues. Drums... well, you know...

Lol, I feel like I am brickwalling everything and that's why it sounds so shitty compared to real music. Maybe I need to start sacrificing volume and velocity for clarity, since I'll never be an ME or be able to afford one.

This helps more than you know, thanks for the pair of ears!

I'm idiotically genre-blind only to my own music, which I'm pretty sure isn't normal.

It's definitely too bassy, I can never find a balance of general EQ for any one song. Maybe it's still a case of pushing stuff too loud. I don't really know why I feel the need to match volume with real albums with an real budget and professionals ensuring that the whole thing doesn't collapse under the weight. I'll never even come close.

So the drums still suck? I tried really hard with free samples, but just like Scott Stapp I can never tell if it's good or not.

Always. The Loudness Wars are over, and loud lost. It's a fucking stupid trend started by stupid people in radio that bled into other stupid people's heads by whatever shit-eating vector stupid propagates by. You need dynamics, otherwise your music sucks. Just turn it down and let your listener turn it up. Hell, crank your monitors to ear bleeding levels for your final mixdown if it makes you feel better, but leave about 0.05 LUFS room, and I bet everything sounds better.

You might try just turning your limiter off, turn everything down until nothing is really peaking, and then slap a really light limiter on to catch intersample peaks. Bet it makes a world of difference.

Pretty much how I master. I make house and I don't use any compression unless I actually need to get something down to around 10 db of dynamic range and a bit on the drum buss for that house bounce, but tbh I don't think metal needs much at all. Maybe at most some light distortion on top of what you recorded, but just enough to put it in a box where it performs predictably. That's how I would do it at least, but I don't make metal either.

I am thinking loudness done right is the way to go, but it has to be done right. what kind of vocal are you looking for? I like guttural vocals from something like putrid pile the best but idk if that would fit this tune. best of luck man. You have a lot of talent
