Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I was just about to say the exact same thing, Eb minor works best with most synths for hitting highs and super lows without bottoming out the low end and still sound dirty.
Another one I like alot is Db minor, it makes for some pretty expressive tunes because majority of classical songs were written in around there for a really long time.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I tend to go to B major for a lot of my feely tunes and if I want to go really dark I go Bb minor or Eb minor. I find these scales/keys sound amazing.

F minor works really well with what I've made so far. G harmonic minor is also great if you're trying for that 'creepier' kind of vibe I found. Just basically minor keys

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I play a lot of my stuff on my digital piano into logic. For some reason I practice the most with C minor and G minor scales so those are where I create my best melodies and chord progressions as of now. I really want to expand out soon though

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

For a nice deep root bass note, F-A range gives some 40-50hz sweet spot goodness. But the lowest note in your progression doesn't need to be your root, so it's not really that important. I like to compose in C maj or A min so i can visualize the sharps and flats easier while I'm playing. Transposition can be done later with a click of a button.

What keys are found to be best for dark/emotional sounds?

it depends upon which instrument you are using.
if it doesn't change it's timbre according to the tension of the strings or whatnot, then it really doesn't matter.

most synths aren't really affected by playing in different keys and you can always adjust the key following of the filters and whatnot.

which octave you play in has more effect than which key.
almost every keyboard around is playing Equal Temperment. So there's no difference. With Just or Pythagorean, different keys have different relative not spacings and intervals. Equal Temperment is equal for all keys so there's no difference.

You can get "dark" pretty lazily with Phrygian mode, just use the first and second degrees a bunch. Other than that, there's good ol' minor anything, harmonic minor, whole tone scale (though that's less "dark" and more "dude I'm lost in space whaaaat")

brih. modes are essentially scales.

if im just being patronizing here and i apologize if i am, but key just means what key you start the scale on,

but to answer directly, with emotion its not so much the key or scale that matters, but more of the harmonic movement. for example in C major, Cmaj to Amin has a different harmony than C minor, Cmin to Abmaj

the scale is more of a reference to a certain quality. as a Major scale I-vi-iv-v will sound different than a Minor scale's

I would say forcing yourself to stick only to one scale cuts yourself off from possible harmonic motions/emotions. For example the afaik chromatic movement of Cmin to Cmaj.

theres alot of complicated rules in music theory but I strongly suggest you remember more of the "feel" and see the relationship between an Amin7 to Fmaj7 than "A minor is emotional" (fwiw thats i-VI in A minor)

intervals and context mang. I feel like I should word this better but it becomes more/less esoteric very fast and arguing over semantics is not useful.

~

TL;DR chord/harmony relationships have more to do with emotion than scales or keys.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

Lately I've been writing a lot of songs by working on a guitar riff with my 7 string. It is tuned in Drop A so it pretty much has made all of my songs in Am or some modified version of it. I need to find my capo, haha. On the plus side, It is pretty easy to jam parts on my keys to these songs because it is all white keys, minus the accidentals of course.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

Definitely I would be stuck making stuff in F major/minor, and it's always fun to experiment with jazz chords to make good-sounding future bass.
