Re: Chicago Footstep...

I don't enjoy 99% of the Juke I have heard, but Boxcutter does a rather amazing tune in the same sort of style called Allele.

I love this track because it just oozes with decent production quality that no other Juke seems to...plus it doesn't have the horrible high pitched vocal cuts.

I don't see it being closer to any other genre.

Its not as raw, and doesn't have those high pitch vocal bits, but its the same sort of rhythm and beat.

To me the similarity is very clear, its just a different sound palette.

Re: Chicago Footstep...

The rather diverse musicians comprising Satanicpornocultshop (who have also done IDM stuff) recently released 4 Juke albums. Personally I don't really enjoy the albums, but I thought I'd point them out in this thread because other people may appreciate them:

http://www.discogs.com/Satanicpornoc...elease/3297606

http://www.discogs.com/Satanicpornoc...elease/3297600

http://www.discogs.com/Satanicpornoc...elease/3297590

http://www.discogs.com/Satanicpornoc...elease/3391566

The discogs pages don't provide any snippets, but I'm sure that they are of high quality for this genre and well worth seeking out.

Yeah, that was a Kuedo track that really stuck out for me when I first heard that LP.

I think the approach of the Juke sound is cool in some ways, but I really dislike the production quality and the vocal cuts in general. A few Kuedo tracks on that LP and the Boxcutter track I posted give me hope in the type of sound the genre could be taken though so I will keep an eye on it.

I'd be really surprised if he was going for a juke sound with this track. everything is too on beat to be Juke. needs more off tempo pitched toms/percs

I absolutely looove Juke drum programming...don't give a fuck. Take that as inspiration and do something with it : ) There is lots that can be done with it I think. Gonna stark working on that myself. Also, I enjoy (as someone else said) that it's a niche genre with a history.

Re: Chicago Footstep...

my first exposure to footworkstep was Anti-G -- "Presents 'Kentje'sz Beatsz'" and i thought it sounded fucking ghastly -- like some default drum noises in a demo of fruityloops 2.0 with quantize turned off. in that context, it wasn't too bad, but i found the shit production absolutely inexcusable coming out as a vinyl on planet mu. somewhere between depressing and hilarious.

then i heard dj diamond - "flight music" which was a tad better in terms of production, but overall extremely forgettable.

i combined the two experiences into this here parody track:

mike paradinas did this interview here:

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1356

which is quite telling. he talks of ripping 192kbps audio off youtube and pressing it as vinyl, while trashing "spotty idm kids" that leave quantize on. lost a lot of respect for the man right there. i liked him a lot more when he was just u-ziq; those albums really haul.

overall, i understand the urge to get away from the 4x4 grid, but those footworkstep guys need to learn how to a) use studio technology on a level slightly above a chimpanzee b) write a song that's a fucking song, and not some annoying looped audio cutup shit. of all the footworkstep on planetmu, machinedrum is probably the pick of the litter.

i actually haven't heard those!! so many things to listen to, u noe? probably should have scoped them out instead of the footworkstep

but, my point was i liked it more when he just wrote good music, and then later sold good music, like ceephax's megalift ep and venetian snares. at some point he decided profit margins were dwindling for that sort of music, and that he needed a ~phenomenon~ to list his label's finances out of the doldrums. so he dug around on the internet and found some local scene about black people dancehall music that probably seems pretty exotic to a white, english, computer music nerd. i would have been up for this switch (being a white, american computer music nerd myself) if the music were actually good, but, as i explained in my previous post, it sux.

Or he legitimately likes the music and wanted to share it with people around the world. Just because you dont like footwork doesnt automatically mean the ONLY reason he popularized it was for profit. I would hardly even call juke music a ~phenomenon~. dubstep was a ~phenomenon~ back in 2010. Juke has barely made its rounds. If anything, it was probably a genre he found out about, loved, and wanted to showcase with profits as a secondary goal.
