Battle of the sample packs

(Warning: Posts saying things like "Sample packs are cheating" "I only make my own samples sampling thing I build myself" or similar will be deleted)

Sample packs roll call, which one is your go to sample pack?

One of my favourites is Goldbaby Dirt n Layers, extremely useful to tweak your own drum sounds with extra layers or to create your sounds mixing and matching layers.

I combo with When Alien Drum Machines Attack you have drums for life.

I still haven't found a good layering pack for synths though...

I haven't ever paid for sample packs, but 've heard so much good about Goldbaby I think I might try it out one day.

These days it's just freebies, like tons of random acoustic drums, 808s and 909s.

Re: Battle of the sample packs

Nice thread to start! I know I'd like some quality field recording samples, sound effects, and especially orchestral samples. I use a lot of orchestral stuff. I'll start looking around to see what I can find for everyone in different categories.

Goldbaby Dirt and Layers is amazing, really. I also favor their Tape 808, but Vinyl Drum Machines is my go to out of the three.

Re: Battle of the sample packs

I'm a sample pack sucker (surprise).

I have every Maschine and Elektron sample pack.

From NI: Grey Forge, Pulswerk, Transistor Punch, Cavern Floor, Motor Impact, Lone Forrest, and Raw Voltage are always on tap. From Elektron: the 808/909 stuff as well as vintage drum machines I like a lot. Junkyard pack is awesome.

Sample Magic Berlin Techno gets fair use.

The rest is random stuff and finds off of YT.

Lots of Kontakt libraries (most came with Komplete), too, and technically the 52 GB of sounds that came with Omnisphere 2.

------------------
Techno starts with a capital 'T', as in TB-303 and TR-808.

Re: Battle of the sample packs

Most of the Soniccouture packs for Kontakt are absolutely amazing and weird and stuff you can't really get anywhere else.

SoundMorph has some nice source sound stuff of interesting things. Not over the moon about all their manipulated bits, but for interesting stock samples/foley they're top notch.

Superior Drummer has a nice basic acoustic kit that I use sometimes.

Music Radar's free sample packs. There's quite a lot there for those looking for freebies.

You know...I've never been a huge fan of most of the Maschine stuff and I feel like I'm the only one. It all seems too processed and flattened already. YMMV

I just checked out the website for Goldbaby Dirt and Layers and it looks awesome. I just might buy it. Unrealistic Vibrating Particles and Tape 808 also look promising. That said, I've been looking around for high quality sample packs and here's a bit of what I've found so far (forgive me if any of this is obvious, as I'm just a newbie on here). Note that they should all be royalty free. Also. I'm wasn't sure if you were looking for good resources or specific sample packs. I went with the first, since you can easily browse the sites for what you want. Here's a short list, but I'm sure I missed a bunch, as the Internet is loaded with sample packs:

SAMPLE PACK RESOURCES

Goldbaby - As mentioned in previous posts, "Dirt and Layers" is a great pack and they have others as well. They look to be of high quality, all 24 bit samples. Some free sample packs as well.

PrimeLoops - If you need drums, "TR-808 Samples from Mars" looks cool, as well as many others (such as their sound FX and field recordings), and their stuff isn't drastically expensive. These are also sampled at 24-bit.

Loopmasters - This might be one of the largest and most popular sample pack libraries out there. They pretty much have it all and seem to be of decent quality (plus more than sample packs, like synth presets and patches). Their prices are also good and they have sales all the time. The samples also come in a variety of formats, some to fit your DAW, like Ableton's .alp files. Also, some free samples here too.

Producer Loops - Another really large library of samples at reasonable prices. Stuff in any genre you can think of.

Sound Morph - I'm not sure who the hell they think they are charging what they do, but their packs look to be of very high quality. There's not much variety, however.

Rhythm Lab - Not a large selection and really not the right style, as they mostly offer break beat packs. But there's a couple that might be interesting. They do have a good resource for some free samples they post on their blog.

Liveschool - They offer sample packs, including some free drum packs if you register. Didn't look much into this one.

Pro Audio Files - They offer one free sample pack and it's a good variety of stuff. Who knows how good, but it's free.

Wavy Audio - They offer free sample packs every week if you sign up for their newsletter. No idea on the quality, but they explain how each pack was recorded.

Danny Wolfers (aka Legowelt) - Since I can't post links yet, you'll just have to Google these. This guy offers sample packs of some of the most expensive hardware around. And I believe they are free.

Ableton - They offer free sample packs all the time. I don't know how good they are though, as I didn't really look into it.

Boxed Ear - They have an interesting section of free samples (only three, but they look decent) based on hardware samples.

I could go on, but I think this will keep someone busy enough for awhile. I would've posted links if I could, but it should be easy to reference this list and use Google. I hope this helps somebody. I know it helped me, because I just downloaded a shit ton of sample packs and even paid for a couple. Good luck folks.

That's funny you mentioned YouTube, because a lot of my orchestral samples come from there. I just look for higher quality ones and mangle the hell out of them.

Re: Battle of the sample packs

When I was down in Hawaii working on tunes with some bros down There, Steve of Black Octopus Sounds gave me Leviathan. Lots of great and well recorded samples in there. Super clean.

I use the Kontakt India series all the time. The articulation control on those samples is unbelievable.

For synths, I always find myself just writing my own. I always feel it's a square peg in a round hole feel when I'm attempting to use a sample of a synth, unless I recorded it from my studio.

I need more organic and natural kit samples. I get tired of the overprocessed and compressed drums in electronic sometimes.

Re: Battle of the sample packs

i dont even know where most of my samples came from, they have just built up over the years. usually i pick whatever feels right for the track and layer sounds then save them, so most of what i use now is samples that have been rinsed and repeated.
