[House] InTheAM - Untitled

Threw this groove together today. What might hold this together a bit better? Should I take it another round after the last break down or end it there? What's missing. Its a bit stripped down and I like that, but it needs something. Maybe just some saturation in the mix to hold everything together? Ignore the bit at the end.

Re: [House] InTheAM - Untitled

There were some cool sounds there, here's what I would try to make it gel a bit more:

- more overtones in the bass
- try bringing down the volume of that processed vocal and having it continue to play behind another element
-in general, playing different combinations of the individual elements together

Also, check this out. Updated 1-19-18.

Re: [House] InTheAM - Untitled

Thanks. I really like the idea of layering the vocal w something else. I will play w chopping up and rearranging the phrases as well. I really appreciate the listen.

Re: [House] InTheAM - Untitled

Very mellow. At 1:23 you have some elements high keys and a bass doing a call and response, but they seem very central, try panning them away from each other a bit, if you get what I mean from my rather crappy description.

I get what you mean : ) I'm unlikely to pan a bass sound tbh, but I see your concern there needing some separation in the sounds. I actually didn't think the call and response was working that well with the groove. In the newest version I just placed a bass note an octave down from the root of each chord.

Re: [House] InTheAM - Untitled

I am no expert, I have started to dig house this year but there is a lot of ideas you could make different tracks.
1. maybe it could be good to gradually implement instruments. First hats/kick/anything and add some more in the first section, later toms etc..
2. Hmm, I think this vocal sometimes does not fit - you can slow down the tempo (this 'ha ha' is too short...(maybe change the pitch too?)...
3. Synths in 1.29 and later on are too crazy for me...
4. I like the bassline
5. house chords are nice too.
6. Maybe develop this with the motif from 3.58. I think you could start your track with this one and work on this chord progression as I find it really good.

I can't add anything more from the mixing side as I am not on this level

Re: [House] InTheAM - Untitled

I'd start off by lowering the percussions, and cutting some holes in bass mid frequencies, sort of where the percussions lie. In my opinion those crispy bass sounds need some dynamic compression in those middles, otherwise they are overwhelmingly loud. This might glue this track together already.

Cool idea, definitely not boring.

Sorry thought I'd done a shit job of explaining. I not talking about the tracks main bass, but in the call and response, the high keys call, the there's a gravelly bass that responds, and then the high keys respond to that gravelly bass. Well that's how my brain sees it.

Ah ok. Gotcha. I know what you exactly now : ) I’ll look into it. That gravely part is already panned a bit, but I’ll look into seperating the two more. I tend to be really conservative with panning and stereo tools.

BTW, I find it impossible and frustrating talking about synth sounds like this in the abstract, via asynchronous communication. Its easy when you can just say “Hey, turn down the oboe!” : )

Yea, I guess I use the term house loosely here as this ended up maybe a little more busy than your typical modern house tune. Every time I try to do a proper slow burning house tune I cant stop myself from going overboard. Its turned into a totally different track now with chopped breaks and the like.

Structure wise it isnt 100% DJ friendly.

You are correct about the vocal. Ive got a new version where I made it more rhythmic.

Yea, Ive not done a lot of those little mixing things yet. Spot on. Ill probably start by adjusting the gain staging for the bass. I still have a habit of leaving the bass too loud because I work on 5 inch monitors. I know I should only just be able to hear the top end of the bass if its sitting right (well, for the kind of bass I have going in this track anyway). Thanks man. Ill think about the multiband compression. TBH, I feel like Ive only really gotten the hang of standard compression in the past year or so. I understand multiband compression in the abstract, but I always manage to fudge it when I try using it.

Panning is something I have to work with a lot, being OTB and not having a dedicated EQ, if you have 2 sounds clashing with each other, it's not like you can notch out some space with a parametric EQ. You've gotta move that bitch over out the way a bit, and I'll do with the bass, if It gets the result.

As for talking about synth sounds, I know what you mean. It's like the age old "What the feck can call this preset, so I can remember what it is when I need it!"scenario.

Im with you! At one point I was only using my computer as a recorder. Mixing from a mixing desk is a whole other world.
