When you're in research mode, you read about what people say about music, what people do with music, and you get ideas of what hasn't been tried, maybe just a little subtle thing that you might add. Even if the process isn't thought that much through, the end result is that all the stuff you've read and the stuff you've listened to, there are chances very few people have gone the same way; and if they did, they may have been attracted to something else and be inspired different things from the same stimuli. A recent friend I've made knows everything about the work of John Zorn and although we've listened to the same thing, I realized we haven't been influenced in the same way at all (he's not so much into the hardcore stuff when that's basically all I've been interested to listen to).

So I don't think it has to be depressing to know that you're influenced by all the stuff you've done and heared and there's no reason music "shouldn't" be thought through. I know some people feel it takes the "magic" out of it. Not for me. Not for everybody.

Also, making music and talking music with musicians is very different from what a music critic does in his job.
Agreed 1000% Embracing the creative process shouldn't be depressing at all, In fact the entire experience should be exciting and fulfilling. We are all inspired by someone or something, And to take that inspiration to create something original is truly magical. I also feel that the only time you sincerely "cheat" at music is when you back down from creating something, anything. The beauty of life itself lies in discovery.

I can never get my head around how self-centered you are. Your expression is not devalued in anyway by people's response. If anything, its valuation is corrected against your own valuation. Which is very obviously biassed.

This is the problem with believing that you are the centre of the universe. When you believe that you are the centre of the universe, you can't accept the idea that you are not the centre of the universe. That's the problem these days though because there are so many people who are the centres of their universe like you. They come up with some motivational bullshit to discount anything that doesn't conform with their self-perceptions.

Given how demonstrative your behaviour is of this inability to accept honesty or critique, I can understand why you have trouble accepting the fact that you're not actually very unique or important.

The fact that you identify childhood as a time where there was no consequence for your behaviours sheds a lot of light on your attitude. Childhood is all about consequences. Well, it is if you have competent parents. All of a child's behaviour is directly related to the past experiences of the parents. That's why it's a parent's job to keep their kids away from a hot stove and teach them the consequences of touching a boiling pot, or discussing their arguments with other children so that they understand the appropriate way to interact with other people.

Get it? Everything a child does in their infancy is related back to the experience of their parents so that they can understand the consequences of an action in advance of taking it. Just like every child's experience is guided by the experience of their parents, likewise grandparents are able to continue guiding their children in their parenting? Why? Because raising a kid is the same, regardless of the kid. The only difference is physique and personality. But it's not like children eat, sleep and shit differently. Just like, as an artist, everything that you create is a product of the past experiences of the artists who came before you.

What are you even on about dude? Our ability to communicate our past experiences to each other is the only thing that sets us apart from the animals. Of course I'm going to teach my children about the consequences of their actions. Honestly, imagine if no one ever taught you about getting electrocuted or burned or drowning or a thousand other facts about reality that could cause you harm and/or loss of life? By this warped logic of yours, there'd be no school, no writing or language, no art, no electricity, houses, clean drinking water.

But hey, if you want to let your children run wild, by all means be my guest. But I'd suggest getting a puppy if you want to raise an animal.

Re: Making music on computers: The flame that faded like a dying phoenix

yeah this is a unique time where art and other areas of human development are rapidly advancing and evolving. Its an interesting time where so much is created in all kinds of narrow areas and genres. Its cool and it is important I think.

These days you can see more beauty and talent on a cement wall by some graffiti artist then some highly regarded early 1900 avantgarde artist that just liked blending colors in seemingly random patterns.

And don't even get me started on music. When I was younger I was doomed to swedish pop hits of the last decades and 90ths pop, euro dance music. I hated music and then a long came napster and internet. And now I can find more interesting music in a few clicks on soundcloud then ever came out of the radio during my childhood.

And everything hasn't already been done. Truth is we are spoiled with quality these days and I reckon that will only improve over time.

Times are good in that sense.

The Jaded Multi-Quote™ is officially the most entertaining and interesting part of IDMf these days. Even when I disagree.

EDIT: I should add that it is very often very informative too.

Well I'm optimistic of some things.

Don't get me started on the environment, peoples morals, fundamentalists or norms of society cause then I see mostly red.

Jaded is an interesting dude for sure he can multiquote me any time he likes.
