Smooth transitions

House and techno producers, help me out here.

Arrangement is a massive stumbling block for me. Specifically, I find it very difficult to achieve "smooth" transitions between different parts and elements of a track. everything sounds far too adrupt for my taste. The kick just SLAMS in with no warning. The bass just stumbles in out of nowhere. Pads don't so much twinkle and sigh as cavort around smashing into things.

My question is, what tips do you have for achieving smooth, continuous transitions between all the different elements of your tracks?

Re: Smooth transitions

I'm by no means an expert, at all, but what I do is mess with my synth sounds and automate a bunch of stuff. Have a high note pitched down as you drop into the next part of the song, put a frequency filter on your drums and automate it from lowest frequencies to the highest ones. You could also do a simple volume increase all the way until you want your synth or bass or whatever to come in when it's supposed to. I hope this helps

Re: Smooth transitions

automations that somehow lift or lower the sound (filters, delays, pitchbends, pan, any sort of cool effect^).

and than there are samplepacks of lifters/risers/downers/impacts/explosions

or just use a very long reverb on your own sound, record the reverb, reverse it and use it as custom lifter
(advanced: reverse the original signal aswell, before you record the reverb, than reverse back.)

also drumbreaks , just do something fancy with your beat before the part changes.
