Limited to one genre?

When I first started out making EDM I used to make house/prog. I've been trying out drum n bass, electro house, (complextrowtf), All the genres turned out pretty good considering I literally just started out with music. Recently I've started doing glitch hop.

What I find interesting is that If I now try to go back to prog house or electro house, I find it really hard to produce... Things don't fit together and it turns out shit.

Does anyone else experience the same problem? Should I stick to the genre I feel most comfortable with and know how to (kind of) produce?

why would you make something if you don't want to?

Speaking of unemployed work of course. If you're being payed that's another case.

Re: Limited to one genre?

If a particular genre isn't coming together for you, it's no shame to go on to something else. At least I hope not, or I've really messed up somewhere along the line!

I don't find it easy to stick to a particular genre. For that matter, I'm not even sure what genre a good proportion of my stuff is even *in*. Somewhere vaguely in the direction of IDM, but who knows? I don't generally let it bother me too much, beyond curiosity at how people would pigeonhole my music.

One other possibility is that you've spent a fair bit of time in one genre and built up some ways of working, some patterns, some progressions, whatever, that you've become familiar with. Moving to a different structure is most likely making your songs sound new and fresh to you, but going back again, you're back to what you're used to, so things sound more samey. Why not try to mess things up and push the envelope a bit? Redefine the genre, even, bringing in some other influences? Good luck!

It's not that I don't want to. Sometime I get the urge to try another genre but it just ends up meeeh, then I am back to the same old.

Re: Limited to one genre?

I try not to stay within one genre, and try to work in elements of other genres into the music to create something that's unfamiliar. I guess it goes with liking all kinds of music and finding some way to incorporate that.

It's more hit or miss, but less pigeonholing.

Although I lean towards a certain feel for each song just by nature/ what I'm used to, working in other elements sounds more exciting to me, and IMO is more rewarding as a producer.

You can learn to be good at something that you like to do. But its normal to be diverse. In fact you'll have more chance of bringing a different crowd into your music.

Re: Limited to one genre?

I find myself composing under some sort of formula I've developed subconsciously, which sounds great, but makes it hard for me to experiment with anything else. I don't really try to go for 'a genre' I just get an idea in my head, and work and expand on it from there. And generally, I follow my formula. It works, and I get something I like. Usually. But it makes it hard to produce something else, since I've got a limited way of doing things.

It's how I make music, and that's fine for now. But I tried to produce some dance music recently, something trance or house, you know - steady drum beat, phat drop, whatever - and I just could not do it. I couldn't even come close. Tried out some DnB, and it turns out I have no clue what to do over there. They're just not my genres.

Having your own unique sound or way of doing things is fine. If you get bored, uninspired or unhappy with your results, experiment. Do weird things. Stack LFOs. Go atonal. Odds are you'll learn something or find a sound you really like, and then you can go from there.

It could be because most Prog House is shit and now you have tasted some other options and going back makes you cry inside.

Go back to prog house/electro, try and include some of the new things you've heard and liked. Force things to fit together in a new way. Make a genre that is your own and you will have a unique sound, if it sounds good to you that is all that matters!

Re: Limited to one genre?

If you want to make music more than getting big dont think about genre too much. However if you want to earn a living off what your doing you might wanna start limiting your styles at first and then when you gather a following you can then have more freedom to experiment with multiple genres. But no matter what happens, your music should always be a reflection of yourself.

Re: Limited to one genre?

I believe that you should in the end do what you want. I think its important to produce in multiple genres so that you can get a good feel for different BPM's and sounds. In the end what matters is what you want to produce and the sound you have attained from producing. When i say this i mean "your sound". And props to you i personally love glitch hop. Artists like Koan Sound and Opiuo inspire me. Keep on going man.

Re: Limited to one genre?

Certainly produce what you enjoy and makes you happy, you will always get better results that way. I produce a wide array of stuff and enjoy it all. It can be tough to bounce from genre to genre in short periods of time, however if your problem is just a matter of being stuck or in writers block, it's best to set that project to the side and come back to it another day and you will likely find direction with that project again. It always seems to work for me.

Re: Limited to one genre?

I have never found one specific genre that I was pinned down to, nor could I ever classify my tracks as any specific genre. Produce what you enjoy listening to and hopefully others will enjoy it as well. I am just recently getting back into production and enjoy the hardstyle genre a lot, but in the end I will take from it what I like and end up with my own unique sound.
