IF you get a gig, but aren't a dj

Is it okay to pretend to twist knobs if you only produce? I was also thinking about playing instrument solo's once in a while in the music?

Maybe I could even spraypaint my old eurotrack mixer and make it blinky and pretend it does effects.

What do you think?

who cares if it's real djing, just use smoke machine to hide everything on stage (your shame too). A laptop is enough, plug it via headphones port and play songs with winamp. If you feel more adventurous use cross-fade settings to make that smooth dj mix without any effort.

LMAO.... but I could play keys or guitar or a certain number of woodwinds, horns, or percussion.

But now you've got me thinking... maybe if I put a kazoo through a vocoder or some other effects...

It's not easy to play live some tracks you wrote without performance in mind and a bit of cheating is required, maybe playback a base and mute unmute elements or create transitions with effects?

Re: IF you get a gig, but aren't a dj

I feel like there is a really specific story behind this question. If a person got a gig under full disclosure that they were not a DJ and that they don't have practiced show to perform and the promoters are OK with you showing up and pressing play, sure.

However if there are any lies, misdirections or unspoken, but important facts involved a person getting said gig that person has dug themselves a hole that they won't be able to get out of by pretending to be something they are not.

You can also use a midi controller and use it to launch all your samples separately ^^ I do this with an ableton push, it's cool, and you can say you're really doing music

Clearly that mixer is using batteries and is wireless. It's the new BS-479. Great model.

Yeah its just a hypothetical XD. I probably should of reworded the title to "Expectations of DJ skills" or something. I have 0 DJ skills though I am sure I can duck the volume. So I take it at a minimal, if I were to get a gig, I should probably set up some midi triggers with a few samples and effects. But Song transitions, couldn't that all be automated before hand? I'm not entirely against playing instruments live as well.

Re: IF you get a gig, but aren't a dj

I'm no DJ, but as I understand it, the DJ works in a sort of dialogue with the crowd they're playing to give them the right vibe for the party. A pre-selected, rigid performance sounds like it goes against that. I'm sure a lot of beginners do it, but I've heard good ones say they have an "out" for any song or set that isn't working to get to something they know will (or just something else with a different vibe). In a set that might run anything over an hour, I see that taking some genuine skill to plan. If I were going to DJ, that's what I would work toward.

Just start practising today and don't plan to even attempt to get a gig until say, 1 year from today.
Problem solved.

That's nothing, I have the BS-9000, which is invisible and is operated by brainwaves. Get on my level man.

So what is aphex twin and boards of canada (when they played a few shows) doing live then? Are they just dj'ing their own songs?

Yeah, pretty much. The general idea seems to be a bit of mixing and changing some parameters (filters, envelops, effects) on key parts of specific tracks. It's not like they're composing on the fly or anything - it's mostly pre-recorded stems with flashy but limited alterations for that 'live' feel. The advantage of having access to all the tracks means you can do stuff like loop a section for way longer than the album version to jam on, but they're probably not programming beats while you watch.
