Icon6 How do YOU start a track?

So I sat down in the studio the other day with a producer friend to collab. The first thing he said was

"what kind of emotion are you feeling for this track?"

Personally, I've never been able to start a track this way. Maybe it's due to a lack of music theory and not knowing the relevant scales etc.. or maybe not at all! It's definitely got me thinking a lot about the differences in creative process.

It's tricky to explain the way I work, as I visualise a kind of sound-scape scene in my head and add more detail to it through adding new sounds. It's definitely a sinesthetic experience.

So I'm intrigued, how do YOU guys start a track?

Re: How do YOU start a track?

have an idea for a track.

usually this happens when im not sitting in front of all the stuff.

I find it far easier to try to get to where the idea is with gear rather than "blindly" trying to create something.

analogy - if you want to draw a picture, in most cases you have to have an idea of what to draw. one doesn't pick up a pencil and start scribbling about in hopes that something comes of it.

sure, its a flawed analogy, but it applies to how i go about starting a track. I'm very un-married to genre's so its important to limit the options (in the case of software instruments n such the options can be overwhelming). Knowing that I want to write, say an 80's flavored shoegazer thing leads me to which drums I should choose, what type of tones i want for my bass and guitars ect, same can be said for my Techno stuff, pick out sounds and go to town within the "limitations" of the sound I am shooting for.

One can say that stepping outside of those "limitations" or rules is where the real creative stuff comes from and I agree with that, but getting something down first that allows me to break the rules is crucial.

my 2 cents anyways. (:

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I rarely ever have an "idea" for a track. I usually just start building a patch on my MiniNova and get something that sounds cool. After that I'll program or play a quick loop and then keep tweaking the sound. Melodies and rhythms usually start to come from there.

So, basically the opposite of what chasedobson said.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I typically go in with the mindset of horsing around. If anything cool happens, I build onto it and might consider making an actual track out of it.

I used to try to force tracks all the time, and this is why 99.9% of my collaboration attempts fail. If I'm forcing some kind of magic, it's probably not going to happen unless I let it unravel on its own

Bonus points: Making cool things happen from mistakes seems to be the best option for me

The same as your producer friend..and you, too, by the way. What you do is the exact same thing as what he and I do. What I mean is when you visualize a a sound-scape scene in your mind, there's an inherent feeling that goes with that scene..like a mood in a movie scene..that's what your friend is taking about..that "feeling" the scene gives you or captures. It's got nothing to do directly with music theory.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I usually just try to find a groove and build off of it. For me, the mental picture/feeling develops as the track does. I end up with some false starts, but those are fun to work on later if I need something to mess with.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I don't even bother opening a DAW application until I've got a solid idea spinning around in my head. Doesn't matter what stage of the track it could turn out to be, it's generally a race against time to get it composed before the idea vanishes from my mind. I've had plenty of instances where I've built entire tracks off of a nice chord sequence for pads paired with some Kontakt Library Rhythmic Tonals and then the next track I have an idea on starts off with working on a full-blown chorus first and then working backwards.

Pretty chaotic if anything.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

Mostly, I have a faint Idea of what I want to incorporate in my track or what it will roughly sound like. Mostly, I get inspiration from listening to other Music I like, pretty standard stuff.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

first things first dont forget to make basic beat, its easier making melodies since you have beat, lead alone may sound crappy at first but when its backed up by beat imperfections get covered up

Re: How do YOU start a track?

Interesting topic to see everyone else's ways to create music.

I agree with some others have said in this thread, having an idea of what you want to make is pretty important, rather than sitting in front of a blank DAW, scratching your brain to come up with something.

When that idea comes, I hum and record it on my phone or, if I'm near my computer, I quickly write down the notes before they dissapear. Then, I draft out a loop, save it, and leave. Next day, I come back, expand upon that loop and go on from there

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I rarely have a musical idea, maybe a rhythmic idea or a sample I like but not a melody.
Sometimes I have a general feeling, like I,want a track to sound heavy or more mellow or whatever.
And sometimes I just screw around on my iPad on the couch and then sample that if its good.
So it kinda depends I guess.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

I guess my approach reflects my being new to the whole thing, but it generally starts with a vague sense of what kind of track I want to make, that is what style. Then I start out with sound design. When I have sounds I like, I play around with some beats, some melodic elements, some arpeggios, and that usually starts a playful dynamic that shapes the track.

I often listen a lot to my favourite tracks of the style during that time and that generates some ideas along the process. For example, wouldn't it be cool to use a Vox Continental organ with a Leslie amp as a riser or some such stuff.

Still learning, the process usually involves the incorporation of new gear, tools, and techniques. All that keeps it slow but very fun.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

Starts with about a 3 hr chord progression on the piano, then pick out the pieces i like, practice it, record it approx 100 times until its right, then build arround that. I find that im usually ending up making the climax first, then building up and down from it, not sure if a good idea or not Do you guys mix along the way or do you keep the creativity and technical stuff seperated?

Cheers.

Re: How do YOU start a track?

Some of the technical aspects figure into sound design. Same goes for basic mixing, panning, and FX. What I tend to include is some level of gain staging and panning to make sure things start to sit well in the mix. I try to look for clashes and mud and add EQ as needed.

Along the way but once the arrangement is done I then spend time finishing the mix as well separately.
