Video card 2016 recommendations - hit me!

Ok, last one I got was a Radeon HD6950 in 2011. I want something around the 300 dollar mark and preferably a AMD card. Let em rip!

Passive active cooling? just for daw or other uses? Personally I've stuck with Nvidia for over a decade so can't comment on amd cards. I opted for Evga and not regretted. What mobo do u have and sockets?

+1 on the 970. I am rockin the MSI 970 4G since last spring and do not regret one tiny bit the financial stain it has put on my family. It is better than food. Mind you get the 4G red/black version. Super quiet. Just be sure your mobo can handle the double 6pin power connectors. My 2c anyway. Check Tomshardware.com for the latest dope on the gpu market too.

+2 on the 970, because I have a 770 which runs all of my 200+ games on steam very well. So I figure the 970 must run them even better!

This. It is roughly in the price bracket and benchmarks well over the competition. Check here for a benchmark list that has been rather reliable for me.

Well I suppose it is settled, then. You guys all recommended the same card, three people on another forum did the same thing and someone I know on facebook said the same thing. Lol

Re: Video card 2016 recommendations - hit me!

another for the 970 great little card but with a little drawback in being its ram you could go a bit dearer and get a 390 from amd as that has got 8 gigs of ram in it. Or you cant go a miss the 980 ti if your feeling lavish. ive got two in my system and love every second.

Aye the 980 is nicer and although I haven't checked the current pricing the little extra bang for much more bucks made it not worth buying for me when I got mine. The pricing may have changed since possibly.

yea but did you get the regular 980 or the 980 ti mine are the 980 ti 6 gig versions.
the evga superclocked version liquid cooled them and overclocked them further.

Re: Video card 2016 recommendations - hit me!

I don't keep up too much on GPU news anymore, but the 970 is definitely the best thing to happen in a while. If it can wait, I think nVidia is supposed to start putting out their newer architecture the middle of this year, which will beat the pants off the older stuff if rumor is anything to go by. But then that's always case with computer parts, isn't it?

I don't think it really mattered, there wasn't a big enough difference in performance for either version for the extra hit on the wallet. For me that is. I'm not saying it isn't important to others.

Aye, holding off until the 'next best thing' will put you in a permanent holding pattern unless you've researched and decided that the item you are waiting on is a key component for the system you are building. On occasion I'll do this but it is rare.

Sometimes waiting for the 'next best thing' is a good idea because the 'next best thing' will push down prices on previous models and can be helpful when budget is a strong factor.

Re: Video card 2016 recommendations - hit me!

you can go for the new RX 480 from AMD or wait for the 1060 Nvidia, I have the 960 and I am very happy with it, so I guess the next model should also be amazing.

Re: Video card 2016 recommendations - hit me!

EDIT: Saw this is an old Question with recent responses. I'll leave my response in anyway.

On a budget of $300, If you're looking at one New, +1 on the GTX 970 as a safe pick. Very solid card with a fantastic price/performance ratio.

If you're looking for one in the 2nd hand market, you can find the GTX 780TI on ebay for around the same price or slightly cheaper than a 970 if you're looking at the 'Superclocked' editions, otherwise they're hovering at a lower pricepoint for almost every other edition. Benchmark-wise, they just about edge out over the 970 in performance when looking into floating-point performance, texture mapping units, Shader units, Memory Bandwidth and general framerate scores on tested game titles. Biggest downsides really are that you'd have to get one 2nd hand so there's no guarantee on how much extra life you're going to get out of it along with it being more energy-guzzling and producing more heat than a 970.

If you're looking for a used workstation card for general multi-monitor or 3D application (CAD) use (& not for gaming whatsoever), the Firepro W5000 cards 2nd hand on ebay are dirt cheap at the moment and are a good pick for a pure workstation-only scenario.

Saying that, Nvidia are releasing their newest cards at the moment. GTX 1070's at the moment are about £399+ in the UK and presumably a similar figure in the US, so it might be worth waiting to see what the pricing on the GTX 1060 is going to be.
