Icon9 How to criticize your own music like a normal listener?

Biggest problem i have is that whatever i create i think it's great. How can I criticize my own music like a third person? I know it sounds stupid, but are there any questions you should ask yourself when creating music? I can't spot small mistakes in my music until someone tells me, then it is clear in my ears what minor mistakes i have. Any tips for noob producers like me?

Re: How to criticize your own music like a normal listener?

Unless you have amnesia, being able to completely remove yourself from your music is impossible :p We're all at least a little bit proud of our work. We spent a lot of time and energy creating it. We also know everything about that song from the start, all the way to the end. Of course, we're gonna be a little bit proud of it.

Anyways, these don't always work but these little tricks give me a different perspective on my tracks, which is always helpful. I like to listen to tracks on different types of audio systems, away from my main studio monitors. I'd listen to the track on studio headphones, cheap earbuds, iPhone speakers, car speakers, shit $10 speakers I bought from Tesco or someone else's earphones. This lets me hear my music from a different perspective and allows me to make adjustments accordingly.

Another thing you can do is compare your songs to other music that sound similar to yours. How do the drums sound? How do the synths sound? What does that song do to keep the listener engaged? Sonically, does your song sound close to your chosen reference tracks? At the very least, these reference tracks can help guide you towards a better song.

Finally, just leave your song alone and don't listen to it until a few days later. Coming in with a fresh ear always helps. Makes you realise what's right/wrong with your track.

Honestly, I know this isn't the "right" answer to your question but having friends whose opinion you trust is the best thing you can do to get criticism from a third person. Some people can give really shit opinions when it comes to music that isn't critical or remotely helpful. Hell, your own opinions about your own music could also be shit. So knowing people who can properly analyse your tracks is really helpful. I've fixed so many shit tracks thanks to this. You're in a music forum! I'm sure you can find someone who can help you

It's less stupid than you think.

I've wondered this myself, quite a bit.

I feel like the 1-2 year mark usually tells all. Too bad you can't use a time machine after each track

The buddy system. i always run new tunes by the vocalist of my project and he's pretty knowledgeable about production and can give constructive criticism. Always helps me figure out things from a new perspective.

That wouldn't work because it would still be your current self listening to the same track, but just two or however many years from now

Re: How to criticize your own music like a normal listener?

Wow I dint expect this thread to get technical about time travel!
Seriously tho, a few weeks off from listening and listening in the car, earbuds, other speakers etc as already mentioned is key IMO.

Making music in the first place is the mistake.

2 days isn't enough for me really, but I agree ^. Give it some time without listening to it at all, then come back to it.

Re: How to criticize your own music like a normal listener?

I've noticed that if I sit in the room and wait while a person listens to my tune, I get a new feeling for which parts are too long. Time flows differently for the composer. For the listener, they don't know what comes next, so sometimes they are just waiting and waiting, and then the part comes. There might be some subtle variations happening during the waiting time, but all that effort to make that subtlety might be irrelevant to the listener, so they just wait.

So if you sit in the room with them while they are kind enough to hear the whole tune, you might find yourself feeling impatient. And that's a good thing, because it let's you notice the flow of your tune more honestly.

Yes this seems to help the most. After not listening to your own track for a while it will kinda "reset" your ears so to speak. This is probably the closest to unbiased as you can get.

Re: How to criticize your own music like a normal listener?

i'm shocked that someone hasn't suggested getting stoned yet. lol. it works.

not 100% effective cause you might get way into it and it actually sucks. But on the other hand, there have been a bunch of times I got high and listened to something and been like.. omg wtf is this crap I'm listening to.

i don't really smoke weed tho. But I got through little phases every now and then

I dont have to work at it. When that initial rush of 'wow this is fresh, and wow this is awesome' wears off I immediately go into "wow this sucks, and wow this sounds too much like ____________".
