Ambient pedals

When it comes to creating live soundscapes, which kind of pedals do you use, if you do ? Tricks, advices ?

My own live set-up is mainly about creating endless e-bow guitar loops (in the Fripp/Pinhas style), here are the boxes I could not live without :
this is a pretty basic ambient set-up (I also use quite a lot of fuzz/distorsion pedals but they're just used to give colors, theuy don't "ambientize" anything), but I recently added these two little monsters and they change things quite drastically :

What are your weapons of choice ?

Re: Ambient pedals

I used to have a Boss DD-20, a couple small mixers, Zoom multi-effects pedal, and TC Electronic M300 rack reverb. I've gone all software since then, but [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
an album I made with that setup about 5 years ago.

I've never heard of your Freeze: Sound Retainer thing. Is it just like a buffer-freezer?

It's difficult to explain... Kind of very short sampler looping a "snapshot" of the sound you're playing. It's a quite strange effect, you can get really strange results with it ; definitely not a studio thing but a powerful live "aleatory" tool.

Re: Ambient pedals

I have the bigger version of that Boss looper, the RC50.

And a broken whammy pedal and a few wahs and a broken delay pedal that doesn't delay anymore and some distortions including another broken one, modded flanger, a chorus I never use...

I'm borrowing this, until I buy one of my own:

Other than that it's Ibanez AD9, Boss VB-2, glass slide, E-bow...

Re: Ambient pedals

Would you guys recommend any of these for vocals? Im just wondering, ive got to start thinking about how to take my music live and im a vocalist primarily, id love some pedals for some live vocal tweakery. I might use a guitar as well but i wouldnt bring pedals into it, im not that much of a guitarist really.

Re: Ambient pedals

Some of my fav FX are the Moog 104z Analog delay pedal and an old Roland PhaseFive. I know it's not a pedal, but I would also recommend an old Eventide H3000 D/SE as well.

Re: Ambient pedals

Line6 ToneCore Verbzilla (Cave Setting); also, Ernie Ball's Volume Pedal is a total ambient pedal for those smooth swells, especially when combined with a reverb. Besides those I use:
BlueSky Strymon Reverberator (it's one of the best reverbs out there..)

One thing I'd like to point out when doing ambient with a guitar especially is that you shouldn't forget the importance of a compressor. I've noticed that when you have a guitar with not so good mics (read: a cheap guitar) the bass tends to overtake the high frequencies and the swells might come muddy and weird, at least when you have a reverb on. I use MXR DynaComp to balance the signal to a steady and wide sound of both bass and treble. It has worked out great so far!

There's some simple looping and reverb and ambient swells here:

Got to enjoy those sweet sounds.

Check out Julianna Barwick, she uses primarily an RC50 loop station with tons of reverb and delay.
Almost purely vocals.

Hmm and Juana Molina I suppose, though shes more of a guitarist she does play and compose loopbased in much the same way, and shes definetly worth a listen as well if thats the route youre going to take.

So homework = Barwick - Florine (Molina - Son)

Both on spotify I believe, probably youtube as well.

Boss DD-7 and RV-5, work great for vocals, too!

dude if you're not much of a guitarist then pedals are the shit! Hold one chord and tweak FX like a mofo, loop simple melodies until they're thick walls of harmony, figure out all the weird non-musical noises you can tweak out of your guitar... very fun!

Also I live my RC50 for vocals too, and bass, and just about anything you can pipe in to it.

Re: Ambient pedals

I recommend all the eventides pedal stomp boxes, pretty expensive but so versitile and great sounding. Also you can use them through midi which many people in studios all over the world do.

Re: Ambient pedals

Good thread necro.

that was sincere by the way and not a snark, i like this thread!

i'm going to be getting my taxes back within a month or two and i'm thinking i might grab a new delay (broke my old one circuit bending it... it now makes noises of it's own, but doesn't work as a delay) so i'm thinking eithr one of the Boss stompboxes, a DD5 perhaps, or the Line6 DL4. Probably the DL4 honestly, they are just fucking beast boxes and some of my favorite bands use them.

Re: Ambient pedals

Yeah I fuckin love Strymons pedals, when I get my taxes back I might pick up the El Capistan Strymon tape delay pedal.

I'm a delay head and this pedal sounds beautiful. I wish it was cheaper, but a lot of care was used so I believe it's so worth it.
