Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

And just for grins and to prove it can be done with room treatment and monitors:

JBL LSR305, pair - $224 (new, cheaper than used atm due to sale)
Monitor isolation pads - $30 (x4. new, eBay)
Owens Corning 703 panels, 24x48x2" - $67 (6pk, new from acoustimac.com)
Lumber/screws to install 703s - $25 (local hardware store, they also cut)
Korg Electribe EMX-1 - $140 (used, pawn shop find)
Zoom MS-100BT - $100 (new at Sam Ash, cheaper than used)
Roland SP-303 - $250 (used, eBay)
Zoom H2 - $50 (used, local craigslist)
Tascam 414mkII - $20 (used, local craigslist find)
799 Super Chrome 60 cassettes - $55 (10pk, new, National Audio Company)
Cables - $39 (new, Monoprice, I'm not going to break them down lol, but I did price all I would need)

$1000

I could even have gone with a SP-202 sampler and had another $100-$150 to play with if I wanted, which is tempting, but I felt the extra effects, more RAM, a sequencer, etc on the 303 were worth splashing out for.

I didn't want to cheap out and hang blankets and egg foam on the wall, I wanted proper acoustic panels for this setup.

It doesn't have as much synthesis power as the other one I did, but you can't tell me a lot of work can't be done on it

5 synth parts, 9 drums/perc, an 8 voice sampler that can sequence itself sync'd to the Electribe, a field recorder for found sounds and the occasional vocal or instrument, and a way to mix and record it all. Music'ing, monitoring, acoustic treatment, I even priced out cables. I feel oddly satisfied with how this exercise turned out.

Right now for me

MPC 1000
cheap ass guitar
cheap ass mixer
decent second hand rack reverb/delay unit x2
if money is left over then lots of cheap ass guitar pedals.

Under 600 is pretty difficult but I guess for maximum efficiency!:

MPC 2000XL (found one local for 350)
Oldskool Cassette deck (70 on ebay) for recording finished tracks and possibly sampling tapes)
Record Deck (50 for a fairly shit one)
and the rest on vinyl for samplingz!

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

I'm of a mind to let people use 1000 GBP just because 1000 USD is not equal to 1000 EUR, either.

Trying to take what things go for in a given market is a bit much, but letting people have 1000 of their currency if it's not something crazy inflated like Yen or Rubles seems fine.

Yea. I'm cool with that. I mean...the gear seems to cost the same number of whatever the currency is. I'm not sure because I don't usually look things up in anything but dollars, but it seems 600 GBP wouldn't get you the same as 1K USD.

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

I feel so childish after reading this thread. I wasn't around before DAWs and now I kind if want to shit on my copy of FL and go to hardware fully. Something about everything being "in the box" feels so sad and anticlimactic now. At the same time I feel like going to hardware is such a large commitment and I just can't do it at this stage.

However if I do one day, I'm coming back here for ideas

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

I was just thinkin about this thread. I'm pretty obsessed atm with changing my setup. I've already said mine within the rules so I'm just gonna say what I actually want as my hardware only setup:
electribe 2 sampler
novation bass station (og or new I don't care)
novation supernova
nord drum mki/mkii (god I want one soooo bad but nothing will make that price worth it unless I make a decision to go hardware only)
pair of tannoy 402s (rather than research some monitors I decided id just get these and not care)

things on the setup list I've already got:
sp404 to record sequences to the electribe
field recorder to add organic sounds (especially to nord drum sounds)

that's it. I'm getting an og bass station in January for 80 quid and buyin the monitors. Have an akai miniak (really shitty) for polyphony. Cheaper version would be the mini nova or mikrokorg

could totally make it work

I'm pissed. Merry Christmas.

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

I am weird, despite having started doing this stuff in the 90s, I've never used hardware. There has always been a computer in the mix. It wasn't until I started doing again in 2006 that I even got into midi controllers. It does feel good to have something physical to grab and twist, but a true hardware set seems so limiting. Shrug

It's just a whole new world I have never been a part of.

Re: 1,000 Dollar Setup Challenge

I'm working on building a kinda "gig bag" out of an old suitcase I stole from my mums house over christmas. Gear inside is over €1k and doesn't include PA system sadly:

Korg Volca Keys €130
Korg Volca Bass €130
Korg Volca Beats €130
Korg KP3+ €300
OTO Biscuit €400
Mackie Mix8 €85
Zoom G3 €140 (coming any day now)

Plus cables, power supplies and so on (lets say €150) leaves me at just about €1.5k for a very fun but extremely limited (1-bar loops from beats & bass max, limited fx routing on mix8) setup I can carry fairly easily on my own anwhere even with public transport.
Just need a single power socket and a sound system to plug into and I'm good to go.

Just took it apart again today (because I'm thinking of maybe switching some instruments and routing, also the multi-fx unit should be here soon) but here is a video of the "prototype":
