Microkorg + decent midi controller = same price as used MS2000r.
So why not just get the real thing?

Er...because you can use one controller with multiple MIDI devices, that's why smart guy.
Wtf is wrong with people these days?
MIDI is great, use it.

The MS2000r has MIDI out and so can presumably be used as a controller.

Buy an MS2000r to control your Microkorg?

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

No. If you are intending on buying a Microkorg + a MIDI controller for the extra parameters, you may as welljust buy an MS2000r for roughly the same price and functionality, with the added convenience of having it in a single unit with all the parameters preassigned and laid out logically for that synth engine.

You're not at any greater advantage having a MicroKorg + seperate MIDI controller, because you can use the MS2000r to control other devices too.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

Indeed.
However, if like most newcomers to electronic music these days you've already bought a MIDI controller before your first hardware synth then you'd do well to save yourself some cash and get 75-80% of the functionality of the ms2000r at a much reduced cost (since you only need to buy the micro).

Using a dedicated hardware synth such as the MS2000 or Nord is certainly possible, but often just causes hassles.
If for example you're using voices from that synth at the time then you're going to be tweaking those simultaneously when you're simply trying to control your other device, unless of course you can somehow "detach" the controls from the internal synth.
I'm not sure if that's possible with the MS2000r tbh, I know the microkorg has a "local" mode, but I'm pretty sure it's not possible with the nord.

Considering you can get a decent MIDI keyboard for almost nothing (IMO)...I'd go MS2000R + MIDI keys

but that is just my spend thrift opinion : )

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

It's also worth considering the resale value if you ever want to get rid of it. MS2000s are increasingly rare and desirable. MicroKorgs are so common that in 10 years time they will be pretty much worthless.

The Waldorf Blofeld is a really amazing synth, especially for money. The interface/screen more than makes up for the lack of knobs. I would, however, recommend listening to a LOT of demos before getting one. It's unashamedly digital, and has quite a brittle, unique quality to the sounds you'll get out of it, which I love, but it isn't for everyone.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

Blofeld is supposed to be pretty awesome. It's on my very long list of possible purchases. D_Davis/Carl Sagan's Ghost loves it...I respect his opinion pretty well at this point. It doesn't have a lot of dedicated controls.

BTW, if you have a set of keys already...I'd say MS2000R there are a bunch of stupid cheap ones on eBay as of last night.

i heard that it can reproduce similar sounds to that of ni massive, and i use massive for a lot of my sounds. it also looks pretty simple, which is good for someone like me who likes things being easy to use, i cant stand spending hours trying to figure out how to even make a sound.

Look at what you are saying though "I love using Massive" and "It's supposed to make sounds like Massive" Too really different things...how it works versus how it sounds. Just saying.

yeah i saw that, the most expensive one at the moment is only 400, which is right under my budget. a used blofeld is around 500 tho, very tempting.

i meant i like using it because it can make good sounds, not how it works, altho it is very easy to use.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

Don't buy a synth on a budget, at least not for a first one. My first piece of hardware was my ESX...and I went ahead and spent the money because it was what I wanted and I'm like stupid giddy about that box still and I've had it all summer. The honeymoon is over and we got down to some serious programming : )

In the end, many of these boxes we are talking about won't loose much if any value if you take care of them.

Edit: I see what you are saying about Massive.

Re: A Good Hardware Synth for Under 500

The Blofeld is first on my list actually. The dedicated knob issue might be a little tricky but I'm not a huge knob twiddler while playing stuff, so I'm not that concerned. I think the thing has 1000's of presets, if I remember correctly. Things are visually represented on the screen.

They're going for pretty cheap on ebay, I think the lowest I've seen is $550 for a desktop unit. If I ever buy one finally, I'll say how I like it or not.
