I vouch for Truepianos, although it depends on what piano sound you're looking for I guess. I'd recommend taking the free trial and see if it satisfies what you're looking for. Gotta love good piano emulators!

Re: A good VST for piano? (freeware or commercial)

NI August Foerster, part of Kontakt(Komplete), is great. I can usually EQ this to be whatever I want, whether its low or high end. I much prefer it to the various other pianos I've heard from NI.

Must upgrade soon, there's things I want from the latest Komplete other than just new pianos to mess around with

Must... save... pennies...

I see that some have mentioned Alicia's Keys, and i have to agree, i spent uncomfortable many hours trying to find THE perfect Piano VST, and i landed on Alicia, it is just simple, one piano, one sound, and it is pretty good too!

Best three I've heard are EWQL's pianos, Kontakts samples, and Elektrik piano by NI...

Not just the best sounding but definitely the most versatile.

On a budget, Pianissimo does the job.

Re: A good VST for piano? (freeware or commercial)

There are a lot of really good virtual piano options out there. I use Ivory, typically the Steinway (German). Some guys swear by a particular one, but I've found that Ivory is pretty flexible. It may not be the best, but it's really quite nice, and like most of the high end ones, there are a boatload of parameters to tweak to your heart's desire. I'm still trying to get something that feels more natural (more like an acoustic grand) all the time.

It's important to me to have a piano that can sound legit classically, and the Ivory can do that. Part of the formula is in the mixing, of course. I also do quite a bit of mellower music. You can hear a couple samples of my piano sound here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
Songs #4 and #8 have some pretty exposed piano; 4 is more intimate while 8 has a little more room sound to it. But these are a few years old, and I think I could do better sound wise now.

Depending on what you'll be using the piano sound for, the keyboard feel may be a major part of the decision making. My Motif ES8 has served my pretty well with its weighted action....

Re: A good VST for piano? (freeware or commercial)

Alicia's Keys looks amazing, but can it be used as a VST Plugin? Because NI's website says "For Use With Kontact 5 or Komplete 8 with no mention of a VST mode.

Another option - Pianoteq has a very nice sound with a comparatively tiny footprint. It may not have the most detailed samples available, but it may be just perfect for some, and it really does sound quite nice.

Alicia's Keys has to be the best for me. Incredibly simple and an amazing sound. It runs within Kontact 5 (free download) which then can be used as a VST within your DAW, so yes.

I use EWQL. I'm particularly fond of the Steinway.

Dudes swear by IvoryII as well. I'm very happy with EW.

Yeah..AutoGun is a pretty sweet little program, with some really amazing high-end sounding sounds. When I first downloaded it, I found myself using it for every sound in a track I was making at the time..it was that good.

Keep in mind there are a vast number of presets for this thing..and you better take note of the ones you like..jot em down in a text file or something, so you can come back to them later if you want to..as there is not preset browser like you usually find in other programs.

Also, this might not fit in with everyone's style of music..but I've found a place for this on most things I do as the sounds from it, for the most part, are so clear and bright. Process them in your mix and they can honestly be turned into some wonderful very easily.

Oh..and there is also the fact this is 100% FREE.

That reminds me, I've got to go back and finish that thing once and for all.
