I think some of you around here use ADAT (?) optical cables to connect expanders to your interfaces.
Is anyone finding those cables flimsy? It seems if I move stuff around they loose connection fairly easily.
Is anyone taping the connectors down to secure them?
I've got some TOSlink cables in my setup. They make solid connection (they really 'pop' in), but they're all connected to things in my rack that I don't move. I do know they're internally fragile and susceptible to breakage, what with being fiber optic and all.
Are they working until you move it? My experience has been that they're really hard to get plugged all the way in, but once they're in they don't come out, but they don't work until they're firmly seated.
I just double checked - they're really hard to pull out. I dunno, man. Sounds like wonky cable or jack.
I find that optical cables usually need to be handled with care. They might snap into place easily enough and remain firmly connected but are more prone to breaking if treated harshly. Never had a problem with them coming loose.

Must be my fault.
Iíve messed around in the back of my gear, to change things around or whatever, and both times the adat stopped working cuz I mustíve touched one by accident.
It was just a question of pushing them back in. But itís wasnít obvious what the issue was!
Cheap ADAT and MADI optical cables are fragile. I tend to buy the heavier duty ones for touring application. At home I've been ok w the ones that come w certain interfaces since i plug them in and never really touch them again.
yeah optical is one of the worst ports. even with that little click it’s an insert very confident that it won’t be budged at any point, which is incorrect. because i plug in shit front front back hand-brailing the back panel like a blind frys electronics salesman. I don’t get why you would leave off even a subtle locking mechanism from the design. you shouldnt be able to just pull a cable and have it break free. firewire is guilty of that too. I sometimes bitch about how 1/8” males always break free from female adaptors too easily but you’re grateful for that when some idiot trips over your extension cable and the jerky yank breaks the connection instead of you having your head whiplashed toward the floor and your wires all fucked and discombobulated.
