Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

Hello, i'm facing a problem and hope someone might help me find a solution.

I used to live in an house (i was renting) where the neighbours just didn't care about me mixing loud music (techno/tech-house/deep house and the like).

Recently, i've bought an apartement in a more "upper class" part of town and i'm afraid the neighbours might not be that comprehensive (it's a 29 apartment condo).

I'm looking for solution to keep mixing without making much noise.

I've thought about some subpar solutions, but i'd like to hear from you before so i don't influence your ideas.

If that matters, currently my setup is a pioneer A-101 amp with JBL northridge N28 speakers.

Thanks in advance.

Do you need loudness when you mix ? We did sessions for the second EP of my band and found we had to keep the speakers at a reasonable level to keep a critical eye.

Yes, headphones. Good studio headphones. Tons of options for all budgets.

Any way you could mix during afternoons ? Week-ends, etc ...

Headphones. I like the Hifiman HE 400i, which have a really good bass and gentle highs, so you can wear them for hours. I mastered the Dark-techno compilation on them. You can regularly get them for about $250 in the US, and they've started to dip under $200 occasionally. Don't know what the situation is in Europe, HD 600s may be better for you, though you'd have to have an amp to go with those, and not necessarily for the Hifimans.

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

Well yes, heaphones is the easy solution

I forgot to say that i mix with a friend and that we like to talk during the recording, so headphone would makes that harder.

I had more convoluted ideas, like the sennheiser neckband speakers (not headphones, can't find the reference), but it doesnt seems to be produced anymore ?

Or playing without bass, but that makes it harder to mix and get in the groove.

Or something hybrid ?

Edit : something like Bose soundwear companion speaker, or LG tone studio, do you have any feedback on that kind of speakers regarding to bass?

Do it at normal people music volumes... it ainít that hard. If I can play electric guitar with others in the same house, I am sure you can mix with neighbors!

Heavy rugs, plush furniture, tapestries...all of these can help absorb sound. Do you share walls? Floor/ceiling? Both?

I find myself mixing more and more quietly these days, but I get wanting it at a level where you can talk and still hear.

Iīd recommend to mix at lower volumes anyways...It takes some time getting used to, but it forces you to listen more carefully and thus should help you on the way to better mixes.

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

Isolation pads for your speakers if you don't have them already, and learning to keep the volume down when you're mixing like everyone else has been saying.

You could also get a pair of cheaper mics and have them on while you two are mixing so you can hear eachother through your cans while mixing.

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

Do all of the things that the others have mentioned.

Make friends with your neighbors. That can go a long way. You only need to worry about the neighbors that have a shared wall/floor/ceiling. Invite them over, cook dinner or something, show interest in their interests. Even if they still donít want to hear all the lows through their wall, (which is understandable, even as much as I love all the techno I wouldnít want to hear it in the room next door) they might be willing to let you know when theyíll be out and about so you can get loud. They might even just be a bit more open to it altogether. Otherwise work around their schedules and hope you donít step on their toes too much about it. I know it sounds dumb but, a show of interest means a lot to other people.

If they still donít like it, fuck them, canít say you didnít try at that point. Noise is ok until 10pm where I live, by law.

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

It doesn't sound like you want to go that way, but FWIW, with either of the headphones I mentioned, they're so open, I talk to my family and forget I'm wearing them. I don't necessarily do that while listening, but I could see it being possible with the volume low enough.

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

Mixing: open or semi-open back headphones and learn how they sound. watch movies, listen to music, listen to as much as you can through them. The most expensive headphones don't mean shit if you don't know how they reproduce sound, but you want studio ones.
Then get a pair of cheap lavalier mics to talk to each other with.
Something like these will do the job:

Re: Mixing techno music in a condo with unpleasant neighbours

I suspect your upper-class neighbors will not put up with ANY bass escaping your flat. The only true solution aside from headphones is an elaborate, expensive set of very carefully placed subs that will cancel out most of what would normally piss your neighbors off.

When I used to PA tech, it was common practice to load extra subs in the truck to kill much of the bass behind the stage etc...

Other possibility is a Subpack, albeit I know of no one that actually owns one.

Move back to where you were before, it sounds perfect.
As a general rule, I've noticed the more rent you (and your neighbours) pay, the more you have to conform to social norms.
I'm kind of surprised that you're surprised that this is an issue.
Consider volume levels more next time you move.

It is 10pm too here, but it's more a question of respect.
Plus there is "internal regulations" (google translate, not sure it's correct), so if i piss them off, they'll probably be able to retaliate.

I knew it before I choose to move out, but did it anyway, because apart from this, there's only upside (being an owner instead of renter).

Anyway, thanks everyone for the feedback, think i'll put tapestry as suggested, try to orient woofers so they don't point at the shared wall and see how it goes.
If i get complaints, i'll either mix with headphones, cut bass, of maybe buy that soundpac (if i can manage to try it before)

Thanks

another option would be to move back to a lower class area where the people are not as stuck up and you can save money on rent.
