Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

Thats a tough question. 5 that spring to mind tonight though which echo some already mentioned are as follows -

1. Spacetime Continuum - Sea Biscuit
2. Dreamfish - Dreamfish
3. Brian Eno & Harold Budd - The Pearl
4. Woob - Woob
5. Chapterhouse - Blood Music: Pentamerous Metamorphosis (Retranslated by Global Communication)

I'll throw in another 5 some other night!

I knew I'd have another five tonight I got the 'Recycle Or Die' 5 CD box-set a few months ago and each album is a gem... It cost me a few quid but well worth it.

Did you get an actual CD? It goes for crazy money online, I've seen it for up to $950! The first issue of the album had a sample from Star Wars which was later removed, this one seems to go for the most but they are all valuable.

Oh no - I got a burned copy.

My friend actually owns the real deal though, crazy!

He's the drummer for my band. I asked him if he had it last night, and he did!

Also, this morning I found an upload of the full 40-minute version of The Orb's Blue Room!

Looks like today is a good day for '90s ambient music.

I only have a copy too, I think though when the recession is over and done with I might just buy the release! I was in a 2nd hand shop in Edinburgh a couple of months ago and nearly fell over when I saw Chapterhouse Blood Music on one of the shelves, wasn't the GC remix though, still bought it and a great album in its own right.

The 40 minute version of Blue Room is great, I do own that alright as it was a bonus disc with U.F.Orb when I bought it way back...

Great choices.

Didn't Eno and Lanois work with Brook on Hybrid?

Re: Your top 5 essential ambient albums? Lets ave em!

I'd like to have *atleast* two sub-genres of ambient. One of them being the more abstract kind, and the other one more downtempo oriented. So mine my top-10 would be, seperated into...

DOWNTEMPO
---------------
The Orb - Orblivion
Global Communication - 76:14
The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms
Gel-Sol - 1104
Norman Feller - Frameless Structure

ABSTRACT
---------------
Monolake - Gobi The Desert EP
Fennesz - Venice
Joel Tammik - Eluline
Sola Translatio - Mother Sunrise (this one is a bit new-agey!)
Micro Cosmic & Daevid Allen - Sacred Geometry (this one is a bit new-agey!)

Really?

Lanois is one of the best producers/musicians working today. He's collaborated with Eno on a number of projects including The Pearl and Apollo, and has produced everyone from Peter Gabriel to Bob Dylan, and from U2 to Willie Nelson.

His solo albums are an eclectic mix of atmospheric ambiance, moody rock, Americana, and New Orleans-style folk music.

Personally, he's my favorite musician/producer. His main instrument is the pedal steel guitar, and he plays it in a very unique way.

Check his stuff out.
