Sound design of this bass boom effect

Edit: Crap, I should have put this in the Sound design & mixing thread

Hello all,

I'm trying to disect this sound. (0:06) It's in a lot of tracks, but this is the first one I've found since trying to recreate it.

The way I hear it, there is
a kick drum
some kind of pitched bass maybe?
lots of reverb from some sound?

Have you guys ever made this sound? Do you have any tips to making it? I try it, but it doesn't seem to gel together well, so I think I'm missing something.

thanks!

Re: Sound design of this bass boom effect

If you mean the snare then all it is - is layers and compression.

1. get a tom and some snares
2. compress to hell
3. Resample
4. add more elements that are missing
5. add some white noise if you want
6. compress to hell
7. resample

It's actually the effect after the snare. the release after the build-up

It's definitely more than that. Wouldn't just that create some kind of issues in the lower spectrum? I know I need to drench something in reverb though.

Re: Sound design of this bass boom effect

Kick drum with a long reverb, you then want to e.q. just the reverb either by having it on a separate bus or eq'ing within the plug-in if applicable. Just cut the low-end and experiment till it starts sounding good!

Alternatively a lot of sample packs have quite similar sounds one that comes to mind would be Vengeance but I can't guarantee you will get the EXACT same sound! Good luck!

Well I wasn't looking for the EXACT same sound. just a similar effect. Thank you for this helpful description! All this would then be layered over some type of sub bass with a falling pitch effect it seems. I'll definitely experiment and post my results when I get back home!

Re: Sound design of this bass boom effect

Tom boosted at 200 and compressed.
White noise with some attack, "glued"/compressed/limited together with the rest of the snare layers.

Some very long reverb (on the kick, or something completely else).

Re: Sound design of this bass boom effect

Really just use your smapler, add a few long reverbs to switch around with and start preview hitting percussion samples until something sound right. If you notice aspects of what you hear in your head save it and start layering until you get the whole of it.

This was my first attempt that I ended up being happiest with. I tried putting in a few other things, but it just made it really messy. Anyways, this is exactly the sound I was looking for!

For those interested, I have three layers:
A crash cymbal with delay
The kick with an audio effect rack split into two paths: one dry and one wet.
-The wet starting with an EQ that is highpassed, has a slight boost around the click-y range, and has a high shelf with attenuation of around 5dB. Obviously these values change from kick to kick.
Then my sub, pitch modulation to taste.

I tried, putting reverb on a few other things including a hi-hat, a woodblock, and some kind of metallic-sounding percussion. I thought the woodblock sounded ok, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks for your help guiz!
