Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

Electronic music = music made with electronic instruments (including the computer).
Computer music = music made with a computer.

I've never really heard the term 'computer music' in any formal / professional context tbh.

Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

Well say if I record a bunch of samples with a mic and sequence them with a DAW. Even using VST effetcs. Would you call that electronic music or computer music?

I guess these days there's a thin line between.

I would use the term electronic music, because for us computers are really basic electronic objects... I can see there's a thin line. In this sense Autechre (or part of what they did) would be probably computer music, while the first Steve Reich electronic music, I guess.

Wikipedia says this

"Computer-generated music is music composed by, or with the extensive aid of, a computer. Although any music which uses computers in its composition or realisation is computer-generated to some extent, the use of computers is now so widespread (in the editing of pop songs, for instance) that the phrase computer-generated music is generally used to mean a kind of music which could not have been created without the use of computers. We can distinguish two groups of computer-generated music: music in which a computer generated the score, which could be performed by humans, and music which is both composed and performed by computers. There is a large genre of music that is organized, synthesized, and created on computers."

Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

a computer can generate sound just like a synth , both are made of electronics , some synths are very advanced and have firmwares acting like a computer OS , ther's no difference , not only that, but now days you have phones and tablet both able to generate sound just as a synth , and some even support DAWS wich lead them the computer category , even some synths have DAW capabilities .. , where would you place that ? and what about analogue/sampler/sequenceur ? they have the computer capabilities while being described as " electronic instruments " ?

you could say that , i dont know , like years years ago when computer acted just like , something computing ...but its all blurred out now , i mean its ok if you wanna brand yourself a marketing image saying that " dude am so an electronic musician , computers are for fags not real musician " ( because lets face it , thats where it lead ) for me , technically thers no limit , no difference

^^^This.

If I make a tune on an Ipad I don't call it Ipad music. If I make a tune on a groovebox I don't call it groovebox music. It's all electronic music and the term 'computer music' is wholly unnecessary.

Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

So if I record in my DAW my acoustic guitar with me slapping my knees with a ping pong paddle, I should call that electronic music?

WHO AM I!?

Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

I say this.

Electronic music is made with almost all synths. Real or virtual.

Computer music is made comprised of any sound ever sequenced and manipulated in unreal ways with the power of a computer.

Either way it needs more cowbell.

Do you layer many offset butt slaps for a multi timbered sound?

Re: The difference between Electronic Music and Computer Music

focalized, what i like to do is try get as many different mallets to get as many different kinds of sound possible from a wet hand to a cd to a book.

droctopu5 i like to try them in different rooms to get different acoustics, like a empty bedroom or outside or the bathroom. sometimes putting a blanket or something over the mic to muffle it all the way to having a pvc pipe with my butt claping on one side and the mic in the tube on the other side.

its amazing what you can do with butt claps, really put that personal touch into my music.

How do you compensate for the loss of innocence in these butt slapping sessions? I'm guessing a noise gate.
