This is not a remix competition, it's about improving your mixdown skills.
Sorry, wasn't meaning to put the idea on par with this one's usefulness. It could be a decent creative exercise for people when they're stuck and have other time constraints.

Anyway, haven't yet created stems in Ableton but remember reading about issues with return tracks. Something about having to solo each one out/time consuming. (?)

I guess my only other concern would be finding something of mine in a dj set whom I didn't offer it to or this being a repository for lurkers to take, rather than give. Seeing as I'm pretty mia lately, I'd be in the lurker camp but you get where I'm goin' with this.

Just want to point out that multi-track raws are not actually called stems. Debatable indeed.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

Raws are no fx, raw with zero processing. Stems have all the fx enabled and can also be bussed/grouped. I guess some raws could be grouped together for little one-time sounds and such too, but I think stems mostly refers to processing being included. And if you want to mix a raw session, already having processing would be undesirable.

Yes in live if you have anything on a send you have to solo the track that is sending the signal and record it on its own post master so the effect that is on the send gets applied. If you just set it to export all tracks it won't work because technically there isn't any audio sitting on the send to be exported.

No way around it, I learned this the hard way. Took me a while to sort out why my stems didn't sound like the track. It all made sense though when I realized what was actually happening in the export process.

Re: Mixing & Mastering Project

Ok, I'm open to mixing someone's song and getting a song mixed. Enough of this debate about what a stem is or whether or not this is a good idea. I need practice and so do others. And there's nothing better than mixing an interesting song you can enjoy (hopefully)!

I request 24 bit WAVs or AIFFs (or Ableton Live sets with all samples included). The more individual tracks the better. I don't have any popular third party plugins. No NI, no Waves, no nothing except for the TDR VOS SlickEQ and that isn't exactly a well-known plugin. I can say however that I don't really need any third party crap except for weird synths and effects for fun.

I get decent, balanced mixes at a good, professional volume (don't know the rms level or anything like that, but whaaatever), and I check my mixes on multiple systems.

All you've gotta do is label everything, and tell me what kind of vibe you're looking for, and any details about what you want done. Email me at [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
with a drop box or a mega upload or mediafire or literally any sharing service. It's nice to put everything in a tidy zip or rar file btw. Obviously I'll need your forum name as well or else I'll take all the credit : P

If anyone wants to mix something of mine, let me know. I have one in mind that I simply cannot make sound good no matter what I do. It is very intense noisy experimental electronic punk.

I'd be well up for this, yep. Can't send stems to anyone else just yet (maybe in a week or so), but I'd enjoy mixing someone else's stuff.

Shotgun no challenges!
.. that means I win right?:problemofficer:

But I really like this idea! I am all for mixing someone else's stuff mainly for my own self development.
And when I finish some more tracks I will be happy for people to mix for their development too.

That's actually the opposite of what I had in mind tbh. The idea is for at least a couple of people to have a go at mixing a track so that the song writer can compare and contrast a couple of people's versions and give feedback on what they like and don't like and why they might prefer one mix over another.
