Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I don't know if I would say it is my favorite, but I tend to always start jamming around on my keyboard in Cm. Must have been the first one I got comfortable with or something. Once I get a cool little idea going, I will usually transpose the riff to ensure that all my songs aren't in Cm. haha. Variety is the spice of life.

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

Having a 25-key MIDI controller makes it hard to branch out into different keys. One of the only keys that has enough range is Aminor. Jaded was right about what he said about needing 2 octaves for every octave of playability.

What's stopping you from recording midi in Cmaj/Amin and then transposing it?

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

F minor / Ab Major.... It's what I'm used to and the kick sits nice at an F. I want to swing over to F# here shortly but I'm used to chords and walking up and down the scales in F minor

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

Cminor seems to be what I end up using more often than not. To the point that it annoys the fuck out of me.

So I'll just say BMaj

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I love the fancy scales like melodic and harmonic minors. but my personal favorite to compose in is A Gypsy Minor, such a beautiful sounding scale. here is the scale steps w - h - + - h - h - + - h so A B C D♯ E F G♯ for the key of A

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

I always use A minor (C major) because it's easy to understand for me and all the keys are white and easy to play. But I'm thinking these days to get used to anothers, maybe G minor or C minor, because I'm thinking that limit myself to that scale only is a bad habit.

Typically I use minor keys, like G sharp minor or Fm minor but am now starting to start creating tunes in major keys for a different feel

Minors are my go-to, though I admittedly don't know too much about theory. I should probably expand what scales I use >_>

Re: What is your favoite key/scale for a song?

E flat minor is really nice because it's mostly on the black keys and technically you can hit a really nice low E flat which has a lot of bass without sounding too low and flabby and "groggy". It also transposes nicely to G major. Unfortunately, the only thing I don't like is that my 25-key controller doesn't have enough keys to really play in that key. So you need at least 49-keys to handle all the octaves.
