Music Forums are Boring

Seriously? It's almost 2014 and we are still sitting here typing and commenting on links. I feel like its still 2002 with forums, especially with music. We have the IDMf radio, which is pretty awesome and we have the chatroom which well you know....

I've known about turntable.dj or whatever its called which has recently tanked. What do you think is better way to experience music over the web in the a better fashion rather than this crap boring version we have now.

Mock all you want. But I don't feel the potential of what could be done with music and the internet is being reached in the slightest.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

Actually there is no radio anymore because of lack of interest... When I was streaming there were usually 1-3 people online and most of the time these were my friends and not even people that hang out on here (there were some exceptions of course).

So in the end why make such an effort if noone cares anyway?

Re: Music Forums are Boring

Of course forums can be boring, you're not supposed to hang out on them.
I think we've given it more than a fair go at making it more of an interactive place here though and that could be supported by the number of people who've made this place what it is simply by being around, getting involved, helping others with their issues and taking inspiration from the group.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

Forums are cool for making comments that aren't bound by a 140 character limit, and it's kinda difficult to get into any decent kind of rolling discussion in a chat window or similar environment. I agree there's probably better ways to actually discover new music and hear it as it plays rather than read about it, but there's things about forums that you just don't from on typical social media platforms. Music is cool, but so is worthwhile and interesting interaction covering a wide range of topics without all the lolztags haha yoloflagpolelookinswag #bananaface stuff flooding the space.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

not sure what do you expect from a forum ? there might be other way to enjoy/explore music, but from my experience in all honesty IDMF is the best source of anything music that ever crossed my way ,so much experience and good stuff concentrated in one place ..if you dont find whatever your looking for, you might just be in the wrong place

Re: Music Forums are Boring

This is the first music forum I've signed up to. I was wary to do so because I use forums a lot regards video games and cars and man there's so much in-fighting about petty crap. Given how subjective music is, I wanted to steer clear of the potential of reading loads of arguments about what quantifies a good piece of music. Especially as I've been doing music professionally for almost a decade now and am very settled in my workflow and musical style. I consider myself very open minded and didn't want to expose myself to unnecessary negativity around music. At the end of the day people's creativity is what it is and even if it's not too your taste, it should be commended.

That said, I took the chance and signed up here and was refreshingly surprised at what a supportive and nice community this is. It has a good sense of humour and there's some awesome music being showcased.

I think if you're starting out and still unsure of certain aspects of production, this place is brilliant. Anything but boring. In the short time I've been here, I've seen some fantastic advice and some absolute gems of wisdom. Some questionable advice about limiting, but that's what discussions are for. Weighing up possibilities, exploring alternatives etc...

I don't think this place is boring. It's an internet forum, which by definition means people sitting around discussing various things that are on their mind usually around a specific context (in this case electronic music). It's not going to change the world, just enjoy it for what it is. There are a lot of positives to be had here. Just see the glass as half full.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

For you it might be boring, since you have utilised the knowledge here at a high degree. For me, and other young and learning producers, its like a paradise for information, i read things around everyday, ask and learn, since i cant afford the time or money to attend a school of this subject....And honestly, im really gratefull such a community exists. If you want to have a reason to keep sneaking around these forums, i'd say stay and help people, and after sometime they will do the same to that time's young producers. (at least some of them) That's how it generally goes in life right? It's how we evolve and progress.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

I love this forum and am grateful for the members. But I feel like we could come together in a different way to explore music.

I am not saying the information is boring, but rather how we present given the resources we (the human race) have.

Quote:

No you're not. But I think we all WANT a place to hang out that is more, well, group oriented.

Quote:

I agree. I would never want to discuss music in a dumbed down social media portal. I'm talking about a new experience, one that hasn't been done before. I am not saying YOU are boring or the site's content is boring. I'm just saying the experience does not reflect music as a medium.

A redesigned listening booth could feature some cool things. Imagine a grid, each square a track or what have you. You click on the track and enter a "chatroom" where you can talk about the track in real time with others in the room. Imagine the feedback then? Instead of a single comment the poster could see people discussing his track. As an artist I would love to see what experiences my music, shared or unique could produce between people.

Sorry if I offended anyone but I work with web and apps and all that up and coming jazz and have seen mediums, such as TV, basically have a new type of immersion be invented using today's technology.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

Well, idmf do need to get around to improving certain things about the forum. It's about time we had that fully fledged sci-fi style virtual simulation immersion environment, where you fly around in a black sphere with your own scape.

But yeah, for every 10 posts there needs to be at least 1 post guiding people to new incredible music. Or something constructive.

It does annoy me how little people seem to share newly discovered music on this messageboard

I don't think vBulletin can do anything nearly like that. And even if they could who's paying for it? You've seen the donation ticker. What is it now like 600 out of a goal of 3k with roughly only 3 weeks left in the year?

If you want something done like that, time get your wallet out.

Re: Music Forums are Boring

I don't think the interface is really the issue, we have a regular IRC room anyone here is free to use at any time. I think the most people I've ever seen in there at once is about 20.

This place may seem like it has a huge amount of users but it's really not that many.
Go and look at the front page for yourself.
Quote:
Currently Active Users: 218 (38 members and 180 guests)
Split those 38 (logged in) by the number of tracks in the LB and you're going to be waiting a long time to chat to anyone.

Concerning what people post, we have no control over that (apart from moderating obviously), and we have no way of predetermining the perceived quality of what users will post.
Occasionally I'll add a thread here or there to get a bit of discussion going but generally I try to stick to stuff that I find genuinely interesting and think people here will too.
