Could never understand vinyl records.

I mean how they work. Sounds silly but looking at that tiny groove, even in a macro pic, I could never understand how pure, natural sound and pitch can be stored and reproduced physically on the record. Something like a music box that plays a simple tone makes sense. The complexity of sound and texture being in such a tiny groove makes my head hurt.

Does that make sense?

Re: Could never understand vinyl records.

It's basically an analog version of a waveform.

A physical imprint of the master track created from recording to tape.

It is kind of a headfuck but it demonstrates the simplicity of sound in an elegant sort of way.

All I know is that Kid A sounds great on vinyl.

Re: Could never understand vinyl records.

In the end it's pretty straightforward - and damn old invention

Audible sounds are differently vibrating airwaves. If you get to store and play back that vibration - voila - you have a record. Works with clay pots as well as seen on Mythbusters OP have a look at that episode and you might understand the whole thing better.

Looking at the groove won't get you far - unless you are a DJ who has used vinyl a lot

Re: Could never understand vinyl records.

Nice videos. Understand the make up just hard to imagine how any complex and unique sound can be pressed into plastic and still sound the same and precise.
