[Soundscape Challenge Entry] Ambient Mechanics - Frank's Theme

This is my entry for the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
we hold on here, where you're given a sample and have to build a soundscape around / based on it, in a given period of time. As I said elsewhere, the sample made me think of that scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey, where Bowman tries to save Dr. Frank Poole, but has to let him go and he drifts off into space..hence the title "Frank's Theme"

Playing Master of Orion while listening to this. Fits sooooooo well. Goes slightly Blade Runner in a few places.

Wasn't crazy on some of the adagio-style parts. Stepping down and up notes on the square has never been a thing for me, even though I know its purely a style choice and others love it. Minor quibble though, don't read too much into that.

Great job.

Damn A.M.! Your killing it, nearly 40 plus plays in less than a few hours!

I have listened to this 3 times now on Monitors, computer speakers, and headphones. The mid/high frequencies are a bit bright for my taste. Wish there was little more variation of different waveforms, and ambiance. BUT THISIS ALL coming rom someone who writes really busy songs!

I really do enjoy your use of cutoff movements. Sounds used as a fx bed, and composition as a whole.

Best of luck in Soundscapes Challenge

Thanks for sharing this here ion the listening booth!

Thanks guys..really appreciate the listens and comments. I haven't posted anything in here for a while and thought it's time I should..as well as get a plug in for the Soundscape Challenge at the same time.

Glad you both liked it..and thanks for the feedback..too bad it didn't totally blow ye away..but I would have been surprised if it had, tbh..some really fair points you both raised..all taken on board.

Cool chilli song. It reminds me to Bladerunner too. Very Vangelis like.

Thanks for that, Plague..yeah, it seems I can't shake loose the Vangelis influence..the guy's been such a huge inspiration to me from the start, just as I've been a huge fan of his. He is one of the main reasons I started producing in the first place and I always wondered how one guy could make "that sound" on his own.

Over the years, I've some really good artists out there who come close to his style, but few seem to have mastered it convincingly, on an ongoing basis.. One of those who has. imo, is a guy called [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]
(aka: Rylo 3 / SpectrumShift ) and who I was once mistaken for on here..obviously I took it as a compliment.

The thing is, I'm not trying to "be" Vangelis..it's just that I love producing stuff that sounds likes his..and therein lies the problem..you always end up being compared wit him and that's a contest you're never going to win..regardless of how good you are or may be..you're always going to be "that guy who thinks he's Vangelis".

I've been asked more than a few times in the past, "When are you going to stop farting around trying to do Vangelis and do something original?", which lead me to try different things, styles and genres..but the Vangelis thing is what I seem to do best and what comes naturally to me..so I guess it's what I meant to do musically.

Granted, I need to focus on the technical side of things a little more..but as they say, "knowing is something and putting it into action are two different things." I know what needs to be done..I just have to master how you do it..compression being the main bone of contention.

Anyway, thanks again for checking it out and for leaving feedback..really appreciate both,

Re: [Soundscape Challenge Entry] Ambient Mechanics - Frank's Theme

I think there is nothing wrong about sounding like Vangelis. Edgar Fröse of TD died, so there is a gap left for such music. And your music will never be 100% alike Vangelis. As you wrote, it comes from the heart and that is one of the most important aspects.

It's hard to get rid of influences and somehow these influences determine the way you sound for the better.

Yeah..Edgar was a real loss..another of my heroes and major influences, though maybe no so apparent when you listen to my stuff as Vangelis.

Oh well..maybe one day..a few hundred years from now, they'll be playing my work and loving it..maybe not.

Nice textures.

I like that bell sound that plays with the stereo field of the track. It's almost like a whale call in a way, and space whales are awesome. Hehehe

I like the emptiness in the outro, it's really creating an environment.

Thanks for taking the time to check this out and leave your thoughts/feedback..really appreciate it. Glad you liked it.

Like how you picked up on the outro..the whole point of which was to help set the piece within a piece, if you know what I mean..to help give the impression of something taking place within a different setting..an old movie scoring trick.
