How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

More complicated stuff usually around 40 tracks or more in a song.
Ambient stuff is closer to 10-15 for me.

Obviously more sounds doesn't mean it's better, it depends on how it's put together. I'm just wondering out of curiosity.

I usually have around 70 - 120 tracks, but that's only because I prefer to keep things on their own channels. So one track might just have a sample that plays 5 or 6 times in the song, but I like to have that sample on it's own with an fx chain behind it that I can change whenever I want. And then I'll bounce that sample down to another track with fx so it begins to add up very quickly.

If my pc was struggling for resources I'd consolidate my sounds into single tracks, but as it is things are running ok and I quite like the workflow & options available by having each sound sitting in it's own space. I could easily see someone having many more tracks than that.

Re: How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

Many of my tracks go into the 50+ stage, but then quite often this is down to many of the individual samples taking up their own track. Some samples I will share on one track but generally try to keep most things separated. This is useful when it comes to mixing things down. I tend to bounce down every channel as it's own part ready to work in a new clean project specifically for the mixdown stage. It can be irritating to find varying sounds appearing on the same channel that you want separate control over in the mixdown stage when they appear on the same channel.

Re: How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

usually the minimum is about 40 total, but usually its more like 100-200 or so total. i never have them all running at the same time though. i might have 3-4 tracks making just one kick for example, which will then get bounced back in to the project on to one track. i will do the same with all my sounds, sometimes with far more layers, and sometimes with only one. also there are secondary audio tracks, which i use for the same sound but with different effects on it, or FX sends, mix busses, MIDI tracks e.t.c.

for my mixdown i usually compile them all in to about 20-30 tracks.

Re: How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

Despite lovin the program that is Cubase, I can understand why some people disslike it for it's messyness. When working a project, you don't just end up with actual MIDI and audio tracks to deal with, but VST tracks and all the automation stuff happening on screen at once. These can also end up hidden and accidentally moved into other folders by mistake and in a busy project, it can be stressfull.

I think I need to organise things better though and use more folder tracks. It's just I like to be able to see whats going on at all times or rather at most have to scroll up and down as opposed to opening up folders and hidden automation lanes. I think for this reason, many people prefer Logic's approach to keeping things tidy, but I still love Cubase.

cubase can be messy if you let it. personally i find it very organised though. it took me a while but i have learnt a controlled approach which suits me. everything gets named and organised as i go. every new track gets its specific place in the list and within certain folders e.t.c. i have no problems with organisation.
in fact, i quite like seeing things like 3 different tracks for one instrument, it allows me to see the MIDI, instrument and track information all at one time at a quick glance. the only problem is that sometimes it can take a lot of scrolling to get to where you want keeping things in closed folders is helpful with this though.

Re: How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

Yeah, Cubase can be very messy- or very tidy, if you clean/arrange stuff (as you go or at mixing stage). Folder tracks inside folder tracks, etc. Sometimes I just wish folder tracks could be collapsed into a thin line, instead of becoming "a track". Even stacking collapsed folder tracks upon each other can take up useful space.

I really wish Ableton could sub-group. would be so useful. I could group my tracks down to 2 - 4 busses, then group them into one as a pre-master strip plus sends.

Definitely. If only groups could have groups that were already grouped by groups. Of course sending them all down to an audio track is well enough, just not how I want to do it.

Speaking of which, I wish I could build instrument racks with different midi patterns inside.

I've never tried Cubase, Logic seems to work pretty well for me.
I like Logic cause you can copy a track setting really fast, then retitle it and if it's still confusing, you can make each track whatever color you want. I never really get too frustrated with it when it comes down to organization and finding stuff.
I feel like I should be layering certain tracks a little bit more now. I bet it gives you more control over certain sounds.

when doing sounddesign and stuff it can easily end up in the 300:s, otherwise usually between 30 and a 100 about.

I usually scoff at huge track count claims if I'm honest, as I've always found 30 probably enough for my purposes. But having such a good explanation of the process and some superbly produced tunes to listen to in your soundcloud, I might go crazy for my next tunes and try it!!!

I'm used to working with limited gear so I'm always 'economically mixing' (busses to share effects etc where possible) even though I could use more if I needed them with my current setup. I gotta let go some of my knowledge I gleaned from my Amiga days!!!

Re: How many tracks do you put into each song normally?

yeah layering and sound design, and alt versions of tracks can boost the count up.

the project I have open right now is at 41 if you count groups as their own tracks too, 35 if you count sends, 32 without sends and minus three for ones that aren't active. since live doesn't let you freeze tracks that have routing such as sidechaining, i had to make new tracks and resamples stuff that way, if I had to do that for all my tracks they'd have been almost doubled.
but yeah roughly 30 tracks for this one. it was almost entirely synthesis and the non synthesis are loops I recorded with my voice, so the drum tracks are all a single track instead of one for kick, one for snare etc. and also about half these tracks are layers of teh same instrument. so there's maybe 12-15 actual instruments in total.
