Anti Popular Music?

If the song/artist/genre is highly known. Do you avoid listening to it for that reason alone? Do you steer clear of popular music because the thought of every 'Joe' liking it turns you off?

No. Why would anyone think like this? Just because something is popular, regardless of the quality or likeability of the song? really?

Re: Anti Popular Music?

if I like it i like it, whatever.

however a lot of the stuff that makes a song popular is stuff that I don't like. i'm not a big fan of poppy hooks, upbeat stuff, songs with easily understood common lyrical themes(love songs, party songs, that sort of thing)

I like music that challenges me in some way and most popular stuff gets popular because it's easily digested.

Re: Anti Popular Music?

Would your regard 'rarity' as a factor that makes a tune unique? Like a collector of coins would get more delight out of a lesser known, rare coin vs. a standard coin in circulation and in the pockets of people far and wide.

I guess it is a trait of the collector. You have a good point about the easy digestion.

Re: Anti Popular Music?

the problem is most popular music is simple music for simple people. If it doesnt expand my knowledge of music and doesnt inspire me in any way why would i listen to it? Yeah not all "popular" songs are terrible songs, but most are popular for the wrong reasons not because they are inspirational musicians. I am assuming you are referring to "radio popular" songs right?

Re: Anti Popular Music?

Just a side thing that I thought of. Hehe.. I have actually a few songs in my collection as novel demonstrations of pure cheese and commonality. I find putting one into a playlist can add a respectable shock to the flow. Or to make my girlfriend laugh. =p

Techtronic - Pump Up the Jam

Yello - Oh Yeah

But you might go too far with, suddenly...

Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out

Re: Anti Popular Music?

I know DOZENS of people like this. I'm not. In fact, I like to combine all musical aesthetics into twisted little creations.
I mean, how can we expect the world to live in diversity without adversity, if we can't do the same within the music industry? We all create with a common purpose, even if we are doing it only for ourselves...we want to connect to the world, to give and to have some kind of understanding.
Even those mindless, depraved pop hooks are designed to give people a positive feeling, when faced with such a negative world.

But I might just be insane...

Well said.

That makes me think about the music from poker machines. I have recently been playing with the concept of addictive mental association of poker machine sounds. The sounds are designed in such a way to make the chance of win more appealing. Like audio rewards for a good spin. I thought if you can get the essence of these sounds or replicate something similar and splice it with my music. Could I achieve an addictive quality?

Had you have titled your thread here "why the hate for the mainstream", we would have had not only two of the exact same threads but, two of the exact same threads with the exact same title.

Re: Anti Popular Music?

Yeah, I hated popular music because it was popular all the time.

When I was 16.

I've heard just as much shitty indie/artsy music as I have popular music.

Truth. :V

Don't hate shit because it's popular, hate it because you think it sucks!

Or don't really actually actively hate on it, just dislike it like a normal person and move on.

I'm always sceptical towards sudden hypes, but no, not that I'd stay clear of something I personally found to be good music because of its popularity.

I really hate it when I make a snippy comment and the person the comment was directed at goes...

Oh sorry.

Makes it real hard to be an asshole.

Anyway here's the thread:
