Gibson Brands announced today that it is ceasing active development and production of Cakewalk branded products. The decision was made to better align with the company’s acquisition strategy that is heavily focused on growth in the global consumer electronics audio business under the Philips brand.
I hope the staff find new jobs soon, whether in another part of Gibson or elsewhere.
Saw something like this coming and said so at the time they did the 'lifetime updates' thing for Sonar. I bought the lifetime updates with the view that if I got a year or two out of it, it had covered its costs. However they've not fixed some of the major issues in Sonar for a long time now.
Its a shame but thats what often happens when companies buy little ones. They take ownership of the IP and ruthlessly strip the company if it doesn't make them money fast enough.
There's only a few key people behind Sonar so you can bet they will set up on their own and develop a new product or you'll find a key competitor scores a boost.
It's funny how Gibson has been taking a ton of shit from the guitar market for some reason, and now this.
Seems like they aren't going to be popular!
And a few artists have come out recently and shit talked their experience working with Gibson, Bill Keliher of Mastodon off the top of my head.
SofTube has an excellent version of the Lydkraft CL-1B, which I just love. They also have a nice channel strip to go with it. They recently had a sale and I couldn’t resist. Had it only as a Reason rack extension. That and Presswerk should have me set. Oh, and that FabFilter multi band one.
Techno starts with a capital 'T', as in TB-303 and TR-808.
Can you download Essential direct from Melodyne and run it as a stand-alone..or does the registration of the version that came with the daw cover that?
When I've used a version direct from Melodyne in the past to fix a problem its caused issues with the installation and license but it might be worth investigating because nothing's coming from Cakewalk after Gibson pulling the plug.
