Should I get a headphone amp for Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Title pretty much explains it. Also, do those external sound_cards have headphone amps?
Do those sound cards have pre amps for things like guitar? Is there any delay with those sound cards because they are external?

You might want an interface to get balanced signal line to your headphones and yes, interfaces have preamps for inputs. The latency depends mostly on your buffer size / sample rate settings (and cpu).

Also, you might want to take a look at this:

Re: Should I get a headphone amp for Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Even a half decent headphone amp/external interface is going to sound better than the average onboard PC or laptop soundcard, so yeah, go for it...

There's always going to be some sort of delay for inputs, but the amount depends on the connection to the PC. USB might be a bit slow (I think I read it's around 11ms for USB 2.0) but firewire and PCI are much faster and are going to be completely negligible.

No, you do not need an amp for m50's.

I run mine primarily through my interfce (focusrite 2i4) but even when they are straight into the computer or phone they are plenty loud with nice bass response.

And USB interfaces aren't slow enough to be bothered to deal with firewire or PCI (which can both be a hassle)

I might be wrong here, but I think the benefit of a headphone amp (like using an amp in any situation) is it allows you to get more volume before you reach a noise floor or distortion. I don't feel like I need one (using a fair decent firewire interface) as I can't even turn my headphone output more than half way up before it gets painfully loud.

Re: Should I get a headphone amp for Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Using a headphone amp is generally only needed if you have high impedance headphones. So if you buy the 300 Ohm version for example, you might need some extra power. In theory the high impedance ones with proper amplification will perform better than the lower once.

My headphones are only 80 Ohm so I am in the same boat as you with more than enough power. When I am mixing my own stuff though I often do have the interface knob turned nearly all the way up.

Listening to commercial tracks at that volume setting kills me though.

Does it count if I said 300 "Om's" during mediation?

Yeah I have M50's and the same interface as well...(focusrite 2i4) And I can only turn it up less than half volume to be at comfortable level.

So, OP you just need an interface...

Re: Should I get a headphone amp for Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Would this provide good quality

Amazon.com : M-Audio M-Track 2-Channel Portable USB Audio and MIDI Interface with Ignite by AIR and Ableton Live LIte : Computer Audio Interfaces : Musical Instruments [Only registered and activated users can see links. Click here to register]

I am kinda floating between the m-track above and the scarlet 2i4
I can get the M-track for 89 bucks new, so here comes the question...

If someone used them both for the same mix n' master using both audio and midi inputs, would there be any noticeable difference?

Oh I should also note that someone might be selling me a Tascam Us-144 mII for like 50 bucks.

The interface itself won't provide a noticeable difference in sound quality on the listeners end. The interface, however, might produce a clearer listening experiance on your end thus making it a bit easier to mix.

Can't speak for the m track but I noticed a sizable jump in quality going from the fast track to the 2i4 I have now in overall volume and clarity. I think the fast track has noise issues too but that's another story. Anyway, my mixes got better when I upgraded because I could more clearly hear what was going on. That effected the end result, not the actual box itself, were the same mix applied.

Never used the tascam.

Re: Should I get a headphone amp for Headphones: Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Just to be clear since you bring up MIDI...that doesn't have anything to do with audio quality.

I briefly had a Tascam interface I was using with my laptop. It was OK. I would say probably go with the Focusrite, they have good rep among the entry level, bedroom crowd. I had an M Audio PCI audio interface and cant really speak highly of it.

Yeah I'd go for the focusrite as well. I have 2i4 and it's more than enough for me at the moment.

: Also most midi controllers connect via usb - I doubt you're even going to use that midi port for anything. The focusrite seems the better of the two boxes, and their support is pretty good (quick to respond, friendly etc.)

Also the focusrite 2i4 has midi in and out. Not bad for a under 200 dollar interface. I bought mine for 170 at guitar center, they had a special.
