Need some help in IDM drum programming

I used to write techno with ease but now that i'm getting more and more into idm, i can't seem to get the drum patterns right. I tried to chop up breaks didn't get anywhere. I tried to synthesize some drums in reaktor and lay down a fast paced drum track, a little bit like the newest vsnares album or some drukqs era aphex twin, but it just sounds like complete shit. I have tried looking up some tutorials but i still can't get idm style drums right. Anyone have any advice to give me?

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

If you can be bothered learning a new DAW and a whole new way of writing music you may want to try using Renoise, which is used by Venetian Snares and Drukqs was largely made using tracker software.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

It might be worth your time to learn to program some classic breaks like the amen, apache, funky drummer etc so you get a feelfor breakbeats.

Renoise is actually my main daw, been using it for about 6 months now.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

You might get a little further by posting an example after you've reached 30 posts, particularly in the LB. People on here are usually more than happy to help you pinpoint what it is you're lacking in / need to improve on. It also helps to be able to hear what you're talking about instead of imagining it.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

OP if you post an example I will embed the track for you. Just "thank" me here so I see it for sure. If I get my mod permissions in time for it to be relevant I will try to edit your OP and just add the example track.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

If I loose my way with complex drum programming, I sometimes return to lessons for acoustic drum set, like paradiddles or drop1-variations for example, just to remind myself what I'm doing and where it originally came from.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

Definitely something I'm learning at the moment too. The best way is to find good grooves with drum breaks and add some complexity to those, I find from what I have dabbled with so far.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

Cut up a long string of breaks on a 1/4 note level and trigger them out of sequence. Instant breakcore / IDM drums, best done in live on a drum rack with a launchpad when you're out of other ideas

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

Make a drumline, bounce it to audio, take the file, loop it and absolutely destroy it with timestretching, delays, reverbs, you name it. Record that and slice out the individual hits you like to mix back in the with the original drumline.

Layer individual drum hits with foley sounds, noises, synth tones, vocals. Just anything to add variation to them. Basically what you want to avoid is to have the exact same drum sound hitting in a row. A plugin like Battery is brilliant for this, because it lets you lay out your basic patterns and then keep layering and iterating on them.

Just do extreme shit, make lots of different variations, use effects you're not supposed to use, kick mono-compatibility in the balls. Also, make music that 'works' without drums, then it doesn't matter how random or nonsensical you make them.

Re: Need some help in IDM drum programming

most important thing is always keep progressing and recycling. usually having some theme that repeats and evolves and resolves is a solid formula that is very flexible, but it all depends what kind of end emotion you intend to express.

I think this is the heart of it.

Any good “idm” beat will have core elements that are simple, and then a bunch of cool fills/flourishes around it. Try to listen for what the main tones of the best are. Reduce it to kick snare and one hat. Write a cool longish pattern using only those sounds. Get it to where it already sounds good with just those. Then go back and work on one or two measure at a time adding lots of 16th and 32nd notes with those elements and others. Then add fx automation.

You can also bounce down multiple versions of things (do a take where the drums are tuned differently and run through different effects, or anything you can think of) and splice them alll together. Layer it with other drum kits/samples.

The possibilities are endless, but you will probably have to spend some time with it to get anywhere. I’d suggest just keep working on the same beat until you’re satisfied. It can take a while.
