How to start a new internet?

HOW TO START A NEW INTERNET :

INTERNET v2.0

the first internet : my dad said when they first sent the first email, it went to just ibm pplz, so that means- anyone who had an ibm computer, and some kind of wiring a certain way- it would receive the signal- BUT- if there's some sort of data signal that needs to be active in order to receive the incoming signal, that means aother element needs to come into play. and sThat's where i'm lost- how the fuck do you make a signal out of nothing??? it sounds like i would need to go to fucking physics and mechanical engineering school and take classes in science and math which i suck at and don't want to make it my career. sooooo---

we need an electronic signal of some kind- that beeps or w/e with another electronic signal- but this can't be the same signal operating the current v1.0 internet. and i don't even know anything about sautering or where to get cheap linux gear cuz it sounds like we'd need all the linux shit we could get.

so what's the plan?

Re: How To Start A New Internet

Data transfer (how the internet works) can be an electrical signal (usually a voltage) or a light signal (a LED going on and off).
You can't send a different kind of signal through existing hardware because the hardware will reject your signal. The internet is more than a big electrical wire. You have intelligent devices, routers and switches, that route data packets, store them if there is congestion or throw them away if necessary.
If you want a new kind of internet you'll have to look at the higher layers. The lower layer with all the hardware and cables is too expensive to replace. Forget it.
Just think about how long it takes to switch to IPv6. Companies know for 20 years already that we will run out of IP addresses on IPv4, but only now there is coming a small shift because all free addresses are almost entirely gone. If there is no free address left, it will not be possible to connect a new device to the internet.

In the higher layers you can change how people connect to it each other. Right now it's all on centralized websites: you talk with your friends on Facebook (for instance), for this you both have to visit facebook.com and their server will handle your communication.
What if it were easier for people to connect directly to each other? On sites that are decentralized and shared and controlled by everyone (like torrent peer-to-peer networks). That could be an internet 2.0.

But forget that too unless you have loads of cash. There are some people trying to make an encrypted peer-to-peer chat application (which is great for security, privacy and reliability) but they are barely attracting people because 1) too "complicated" to use and 2) why would I use it if facebook works just fine?

IP v6 has been around for years. While not heavily embraced in the west, way out east its big. The internet is not going to stop working. Currently manufacturered routers and switches support IP v6. Its just the usual inertia preventing humans from changing. It just takes one big company with one mainstram product to make the switch and there'll be a scramble to keep pace. There will be some hiccups due to unforseen circumstances, some mad scrambling, things will move on. No more worrying about running out of IP addresses. IP v6 is also more secure than IP v4 (the IP addressing most people are used to seeing).

There are companies looking for ways to make internet more pervasive and less dependant on ground-based comms. Same as with mobile phones, one of the problems is that signals gear needs to be powerful without frying human bodies (which is a real issue for repair teams on some comms equipment). There's a lot to overcome. Signal bearers all want their slice of the pie and generally won't share with each other. And so forth. As tech moves forward, access points to the all embracing web will become seamless. Chances are we'll be using subdermal switches in a few years. You'll tether any devices wirelessly to yourself. You will become your own node on the Internet of Things.

Internet 2?

Already passed that.

Re: How To Start A New Internet?

Yeah let's not reinvent the wheel... Like Nyul said there is no point in reinventing the network technology works. The methods underlying have been improved and built upon a lot in the last 30 years. The underlying theory ( Information Theory) that made data transfer as we know it today possible was developed by a guy called Claude Shannon in case you are interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_theory
http://www.science4all.org/le-nguyen...mation-theory/

He really thought about what a message is, and what problems such as noise, etc. you encounter when trying to send a message from one point to another through a medium.

Edit:

Here's the original paper he published in 1948:

https://www.tnt.uni-hannover.de/edu/...hannon1948.pdf

Copy internet.exe file to a new folder and then rename it to "Internet v2.0". Now you have two internets.

Re: How to start a new internet?

There are all kinds of closed networks that are just this. Just about every military force has one. Some universities have theirs, and serious research laboratories keen on security tend to have theirs. Transfering information locally with cables makes a system much harder to reach into, and therefore rather secure. These are not worldwide systems, though.

On larger scale, multiple companies transmit over the internet system but with heavy encryption and no external links, making their data difficult to reach, index, or translate. These local or global deep web systems actually make up the majority of the internet. IIRC Walmart has one with more information in it than the Google-indexed internet. Sales data, customer data, orders, specs, etc.

Or you could set up your own satellite and build some towers. Pretty sure some countries have done this for their "secret services", though steganography would be a secure system with lower monetary cost to implement, even if more difficult to use.

Yupp, some call this the "true" dark web (since the other dark web is Tor).

Will this new internet have cats? Because if it has cat's im in.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

The other thing worth noting is that the internet isn't a thing, it's a protocol.

Well no, they're not. They work exactly the same using the same protocol. That's what the internet is, a method for the transmission from one device to another over a network. When you plug your router in at home and access media from your home NAS on your television, you're using the internet protocol.
