[Max4Live Device] Looper/slicer that I built for the Push. Anyone want to test it?

I've been working on this idea for a bit, something that can slice incoming audio, and do other fun looping manipulations. I made a video of me messing around with it today.

If anyone has a Push and wants to test this out I'd love to hear any feedback or feature requests. It might not be that intuitive either, so that would be worth noting.

Sick. just sick man! Looks like MLR on crack. Just looking at the video you have 4 tracks being recorded to the device then chopped live, is that what's going on there? Hopefully I can take a crack at this here soon.

Yeah, MLR was kind of the inspiration behind this. I wanted to build something like this for awhile, but didn't have the skill/patience until recently.

Your summary is pretty accurate. I have 4 audio tracks that can be recorded from at any time, and then you can do all sorts of chopping, stuttering, and tape style speed things after it's recorded.

Next up is to enhance the glitching engine with some granular stuff, so I can pitch shift and time stretch independently. Also along with recording button presses I want to record encoder touches/adjustments as well.

A quickstart/overview of the Push Chop device(s).

A few folks seemed confused by the demo, so I walked through most of the functionality.

Looks cool. Too bad I don't use Ableton...

Yeah I think it's pretty damn cool myself.
It's pretty tightly integrate with the Push and the Live environment, so there's really no other option unfortunately.

this is really impressive.

I never adopted Push into my workflow, too bad.

Re: [Max4Live Device] Looper/slicer that I built for the Push. Anyone want to test it

Ive been seriously lagging on trying this. The reason being is I've been trying to finish up an ep and I didnt want to introduce it to the set as late in the game as it was when this was posted. But i finished it up this weekend and now its on to trying to turn the work into a performance piece. Looking forward to digging in here with this device to facilitate the performance aspect of what I'm trying yo do. Thanks for posting that second video too. Stoked on getting to know this device and putting Push through some new paces

Thanks for checking it out! There's still a lot of things I want to do with this, but it's stable enough to share, and hopefully get some feedback for future development. Push isn't the workhorse I wanted it to be when I bought it, but this might make me use it quite a bit more.

All good man, I'm glad someone wants to use it. I'd love to hear what you think after using it. I'll take all of the feedback, suggestions and criticisms I can get.

A few things I am working on now:

-Redoing the audio engine to incorporate some overdubbing, selective loop replacement, variable speed recording and playback, some more flexible glitching stuff, and internal resampling (you can capture the output and then start manipulating that).
-Enabling pattern recording for all parameters not just button presses.
-Making the pattern recording more flexible.
-Support for dynamic loop length
-Automatic length scaling for different time signatures.

I'll probably leave the total audio overhaul to the last, as the other things won't take nearly as long.

I want to but no max4live. >:

I hope more cool useful shit like this pops up for the push before long. And a bit of renoise support. That'd be dopeass.

Re: [Max4Live Device] Looper/slicer that I built for the Push. Anyone want to test it

I've wanted to get into renoise for awhile. The workflow looks so much different that, interesting stuff has to come out of it.
Alas, I got obsessed trying to code this thing up in Max, and now that it's actually usable, I'll have a hard time moving to a different environment even for a short while.

Yeah, Renoise is all python scripting and junk AFAIK.

I didn't mean support for this tool specifically in renoise though, I just meant push support in general. Last I looked nobody had really written a script for the push to interface with Renoise.

Yeah I didn't think you were talking about this tool. When I said 'moving to a different environment' I meant myself, not the tool. It would be hard to leave this behind (meaning Live and M4L) for awhile.

If no one's written support for it, I would love to try and get something accomplished. I do have zero experience with implementing scripts in Renoise, so it would be a bit of a learning curve. But as long as it's not too arcane and has documentation, that would be a fun project.

Re: [Max4Live Device] Looper/slicer that I built for the Push. Anyone want to test it

Ohhh gotcha. Yeah I can get that. You got some wild shit going on that I've seen so it's very understandable.

So far as I know Renoise is all Python and... XHTML, if I recall. So nothing too insanely weird or uncommon. There's a tool fpr renoise already called duplex that is basically a tool with a bunch of scripts for various controllers of all kinds, that you can customize or just use the premade setups, it's just that nobody has made a template for the push yet.

If you do decide to have a crack at it some time let me know, I'd love to help out any way I can!

Re: [Max4Live Device] Looper/slicer that I built for the Push. Anyone want to test it

I just downloaded the documentation and had a read. I think it's Lua actually, but the syntax seems pretty easily digestible if you have some OOP experience in Python. It seems faintly reminiscent of Live's API. Split into hierarchical classes, no jumping in the audio thread (so timing is a concern in some cases), you can re-class things etc. But this one has DOCUMENTATION! so it would be pretty fast to get up and running.

I can't commit any time to this know, as I have some other things I'd like to tackle first, but I this would definitely be a fun project, and an excuse to learn renoise.
