Demi Lovato gets owned by an X Factor candidate

I really hope that this encourages any singers out there not to use autotune at all... even if its the standard now a days.

Respects to Simon for laughing his ass off. He is doing it for the better cause. As for the other 3 judges, they can suck it up.

What do you guys think about autotune now a days? Besides that its a bad thing do you think this technology gave less room for more real singers? Why the hell can't we cant we get singers like frank sinatra, luther vandross or whoever was singing back in the days who can sing live like its so easy at the same time sounding brilliant. But now its like people can't sing live for shit. There are a few exception of course... just not a lot.

Who? And why do I care if some person can sing better?

Why listen to the mindnumbingly boring stuff that features autotune such extensively?

I'd rather listen to some actually interesting music. Look at most avant-garde/independent genres, you'll have a hard time finding someone who uses autotune.

Re: Demi Lovato gets owned by an X Factor candidate

I don't have any problem with people who use Autotune as an effect, but can still sing. Take LIGHTS or Megan James from Purity Ring, for example. Nearly every LIGHTS track and every Purity Ring track features the use of Autotune, but it's more for effect and isn't like, constantly adjusting the pitch, because they can both sing, just watch a video of them live for proof.

I do see what you mean though, about mainstream bullshit pop and r&b artists that rely on Autotune just to stay on pitch, that's annoying. Demi Lovato really isn't all that bad of a singer though, and definitely not the worst offender when it comes to Autotune. While I agree that people who sing for a living should be able to sing, I think the overuse of Autotune has kind of over-sensitized a lot of us to Autotune, which causes us to hate any usage of it at all, and that's not really fair to the artists that use it solely to achieve a certain effect, and are still able to sing in a live setting.

BTW, Simon's reaction in that video was priceless, I love how he didn't even try to hide his amusement.

A singer who cant stay on note isn't a very good singer.

I thought I'd start to play guitar, even though I don't know anything about playing a guitar, I can just autotune it. Or do playback and act cool even though my guitar's output level is at zero. At least I'll be nominated as "Artist of the year xxxx" if I endorse enough haircare products on MTV.

Yeah, it doesn't really add up, does it? Audition for a bunch of people you have no respect for, then get offended when they tell you "no"?

singing shows at their worst. it's awkward and slightly depressing when contestants have no idea how bad they are. the guy has a point though but I'm guessing it's coming from a place of spite rather than musical understanding. britney spears comes off as pathetic as well.

Autotune on guitar can be a very fun effect to play around with, especially when you rock the whammy bar like its your dick at the Masturbating Olympics

Guitars are naturally auto-tuned... I mean, what do you think frets are?

This however is a different beast and something sexy I'd highly recommend, also the similar concept of using hard autotune on when playing with a slide/bottleneck/etc.

I feel that auto-tune is just as much a mixing/performing tool as EQ and compression. You use EQ to cut out the bad and hype up the good. You use compression to smooth out the vocalist's dynamics (because many singers do not have proper mic techniques, and therefore perform with a large dynamic range), and you use auto-tune to ensure the notes the singer sings are more in-tune.

However, we all know that too much of anything is, most of the time, a bad thing. Too much EQ boosts could sound unnatural and harsh. Too much compression could sounds lifeless and "flat." Too much auto-tune sounds, well, like too much auto-tune XD. Sometimes you may desire these traits, and sometimes not.

When it comes to the question of "is auto-tune cheating?," I would say it is just a cheat as compression and EQ. It is altering the performance of the singer in order to compensate for the lack of skill/tonality or improving upon the performance. Auto-tune is only a tool, and can be abused like any other.

a few years ago when autotune was everywhere, people had real difficulty with that argument. makes perfect sense though.

Lol, it's seems like it when first considered. I should add though that some liberal amping and distortion is key, it really brings out the crazy sounds of when the autotune is pulling hard on a tone.

Plus to expound on the example I just gave, almost all instruments, including horns and not just guitars, are "auto-tuned" or semiATed in a way. They're built to hit or at least come very close to hitting the pitches.

I tried to point out my personal thought on autotune being used as a "cheat" of sorts if you will. As in not covering flawed tuning of an instrument but trying to cover errors done by it's user.

Re: Demi Lovato gets owned by an X Factor candidate

I don't have a problem with tastefully done auto tune. When you get into robots that like to sing territory it gets silly. T-Pain being an obvious example. Maybe the guy can sing without it, I don't know but it's way over-used in his music. I've used it on my own voice but I'm amateur and I tried to keep it from being the Sing-O-Tron 5000 and merely enhance, and also tried really really hard to sing well, which if you have done it, you know it's not really that easy to begin with.

All that said, I do not know who Demi Lovato is and have never heard her sang. I also did not watch video.
