+1 Lepstock.

There's lots of different rules with regards to how many voices are playing, and particularly around how certain consonances should be approached and departed.

Well worth looking into.

Man, that book's a trip to read but it's totally handy. It does uses some now rather archaic term to describe things. For a more modern update on the standard check out Kent Kennan's Counterpoint - it's expensive but rather exhaustive.
