Desperate!

So i really want to start sound design.

i can't afford anything right now as i just bought ableton and an instrument pack, and am now saving up for a laptop to put it on... so with it (on another computer) and all its wonderful instruments.... where do i start?

is there anyone that have found a surefire explanation to soundscapes and sound design etc...

Let's limit the suggestions to free VSTs or instruments in ableton suite...

Thanks guys

There is excellent freeware and cheap DAWs out there (Jeskola Buzz, Cockos Reaper, Zynewave Podium, etc).
Edit: Oh, you already bought Live Suite! Well, then you are good to go.

There is also alot of freeware synths and effects:

I'm not sure there are any shortcuts. There are many here who have spent years and years, and still is learning a new thing every day. Just browse this forum, Google, read, study, turn knobs, experiment, etc and it will gradually build up.

Re: Desperate!

One of the best way to do sound design with little or no money is: getting a freeware sampler and learning to use it.
Make some sound, export it, import in the sampler, make it different.

Re: Desperate!

If you have ableton, lookup some tutorials on operator, that synth is very capable and good quality!

Re: Desperate!

Do not buy/download/install anything else. Ableton Suite has everything you need. If you want to focus on soundscapes, the Ableton FM Synth is a good starting point (Operator, I think?). If you understand all the parameters and still have the feeling something is missing THAN try something else.
edit: steeboo wrote it already...

Nice, i've heard of Operator and have used it mostly for bass... Now, that said, i DON'T understand all the parameters and so i would like for some of those to be explained, how do you IDMf-ers do it!?

Re: Desperate!

It's an art you have to discover by yourself Read the manual, read about FM and John Chowning and try to play/experiment as often as you can.
